Do Small Grips Make One's Grip Unintentionally Strong

So I hit some balls today--really well I might add. However, in reading the Manzella neutral grip article and Joe Dante's description of the golf grip, I paid a lot of attention to my grip. I was able to see three knuckles on my left hand. My right hand grip looked damn good on the club, so did the left, 3 knuckles aside.

I think the reason why my grip is looking strong is because of the size of the grips I'm using. I need to put about 4 wraps under my grip--I have a 9 inch hand with my longest finger being 4.5 inches long.

Can someone with clubfitting experience substantiate what I'm thinking? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

If you place the grip in the fingers of your left hand properly with too small of a grip for your hand, yes you will have a slightly stronger grip because the rest of your hand has to "fold over" the grip more. The only way to counter that is to either get the right grip or move the grip more up in the palm

I'm not a clubfitter, but it seems to me that the smaller the grip is the more "in the fingers" your grip would have to be, leaving more "palm" to wrap around the rest of the grip.

tongzilla--If you want an immediate way of doing that, either go on pinggolf.com or tgw.com. At the latter site, you can have their system help in customizing you a golf club based on height, wrist-to-floor length, swing speed, and hand/finger size. The hand/finger size is what you need. Have a ruler handy for either site.

I recently regripped all my clubs with larger grips.
I always wondered why my grip felt and looked stronger, despite my best efforts to follow instruction.
My left hand middle & ring fingertips always ended up well underneath my thumbpad.
I don't think I have exceptionally large hands (approx 8" or so), but I think I have long fingers. (I can palm a basketball)
When using most online fitting systems, I fell into 1/32-1/16 oversized, but that still didn't seem like enough.
Since switching to Lamkin Crossline Jumbo grips, I have seen marked improvement.
I could probably get away with midsize and an extra wrap, but the jumbos are working out well.

have you tried winn grips? I tested them, and they feel very comfy.

Jim.......the strongness you speak of (talking only about what happens with the smaller grips)...........

.....would you say this makes for mechanical differences or is this strictly visual?

In my experience Winn grips are:

- expensive
- suck when they get wet
- wear very quickly
- cannot be cleaned very easily
- often become "squishy"

Just not my cup of tea

This has been my experience also. Especially if you play and/or practice often.

However, they do feel awsome when they are new.

Haha...

OK Jim.

Well I guess it's only visual then.

bzzzzzzzzzzzzz....wrong answer.

Of course if you put your hand on the grip in different positions it will effect your swing. Thats why *some* people see drastic differences in ball flight when going to thinner/thicker grips because they are orientating their clubface differently.
