Do you guys ‘actively’ bump the left hip as your first move down?

I hate the phrase that ‘it should just happen’, because it clearly doesn’t for me as I unwind too early. I notice that a whole lot of room opens up when I bump the hip left. I have notice the following since adding this to my pattern:

1. Really improved contact.
2. Really easy to draw/hook it. (More inside path)
3. Easier to get in front of the driver. How do I guard against this?
 
I never do. Used to try that, usually led to bad results for me. Personally, my first move down is getting into pitch elbow followed very soon by rotating the torso left well through impact so I can zero out the path.

Different strokes for different folks, though. The last thing I feel I need is axis tilt on my downswing. For you though, that may be exactly what you need.

Harvey Penick said that the bump of the hips and the right elbow dropping back to the side should be one move,not two.

I'm all for the hip bump but don't forget the right elbow and leave it behind.
 
I did some more work on this at lunch and hit the driver real well keeping the head/torso back during the 'bump'. Balance is better with all clubs too. I did hit a few wedges fat, but I guess that is the inside path coming into play.

whatever works is my opinion, i had to as well at some point in my golfing life before it became "automatic."

Jim, I think that makes total sense. I am just now focusing on doing it and it is bringing back a move I kind of made playing college baseball. Hopefully soon I will automatically do it.
 
Hip bump turns me into "uncoordinated man", I am with Richie, although I like to feel my right arm staying extended to get down in front of me.
 
Wouldn’t stepping on the left foot or staying closed in the transition facilitate a hip bump? If the right amount of weight is distributed to the right foot in the proper manner during the backswing and you step on the left foot to start the transition, shouldn’t the hip bump to fill the gap be automatic?

I do best with a "Right Shoulder Drop" which makes me do both forward hip bump and allow for pitch elbow.

This is a good thought too, however just be careful with ONLY dropping the right shoulder. Remember the right shoulder works toward THE BALL not toward YOUR RIGHT FOOT ;)

some people over do this and it creates problems, remember down AND OUT.

There appear to be several transitions working in the golf swing. The hip bump is one. Another you see is the 'squat' as exemplified by Tiger and others. This 'squat' is on Mike Jacobs Nuclear DVD and is taught by Ben Doyle.

My question is when do you teach one vs the other? How do you know 'which is for you'? Are there others?

Several have mentioned driving the shoulder down or going pitch. Those are more 'top' related. If you are doing that, what's happening with your body?

Anybody done both at one time or another?
 
I hardly believe it's 'automatic'. I know several individuals who do neither bump nor squat and can hit the ball, such as they do. They stand there like fire hydrants and swing from the top.

It's automatic.

I depends on what you need.

I have tried it all in an effort to swing left. I open/turn my hips too early when I try to squat or when I let it just 'happen'. Right now the only thing that gives me enough room to put my right shoulder down the plane it to hip bump.

Pitch elbow on the downswing is having the right elbow, for a right hander, pointing at the target in front of the body. Sort of by your belly button. It seems helpful in generating lag/late release.
 
Interesting thread. I took a lesson this past Saturday. I have a problem occasionally firing my upper body without moving my lower body, causing me to stand up and flip to try to get the club back to the ball. The instructor saw it immediately, identified it as a pivot problem, and suggested that I think of my left hip moving at the same time as I start the butt end of the club moving down in the downswing. The swing key has worked great for me. So I would say I start the downswing by pivoting my left hip together with dropping my arms all at the same time.
