Non stop.
Taught Ryder-Cuppers, and 3 year olds.
Taught little Miss Hinda House, an 80 year old who couldn't hurt me with a driver form 100 yards and a lumber jack who swung 140+
I use to use a HUNDRED training aids.
I now use one or two—sometimes.
I own 5 cameras.
I own 4 computers.
Here is the dope:
YOU CAN OVERUSE ANYTHING!
There are some teachers who overuse the dowels. I get their cast-offs and they complain to me about them.
I won't use 'em, cause I don't need 'em.
30,000 hours of lessons and such, and I can tell you this:
TEACH EM, don't lecture to 'em.
Don't sell them.
Fix 'em.
You can do it with plain old words, and explanations, and moving their bodies and hands.
Anything you can do with a drill, you can do with a club and a ball,
and since YOU PLAY WITH A CLUB AND A BALL....
That will always be better.
Name a dowel drill and I'll give you an IN SWING THOUGHT THAT WORKS BETTER.
Or any drill for that matter.

Tilting the teacup, right shoulder down, left shoulder up, swinging under the stick, blah blah, etc...
But how much? In what direction?
By placing a dowel on the right shoulder at the top (pointing at the plane line) and sliding your right shoulder down the dowel, you learn exactly how much you need to tilt your axis so you don't go over/underplane.
I agree it may not be wise to use dowels as your only learning/teaching tool, but it definitely has its place.
I said this before and I'll say it again, the whole point of using dowels instead of real clubs is that they don't have a clubhead. It's a good thing! Without the clubhead, your mind directs its attention to the alignments of the hands, plane line and body, rather than the clubhead. Put a dowel in the hands of a hacker and tell them do a pitching stroke with a flat left wrist when both arms are straight at finnish. Easy isn't it? But put a club in their hands and watch them flip the heck out of it.
