Downswing start

I've tried to start the downswing keeping my head back for the longest time.
Would that be feasible seeing as often I still feel I'm too "on top" of the ball too early, with the result that my arms suck up into my body to make room?
Tonight I hit a few balls feeling the buttons my shirt on my sternum have to be kept back and it seemed to go a bit better. It seems like one can keep the head back, but if the middle of your shoulders drift too far forward in the downswing one can get into a mess..
Does this make sense to anyone?

Do you have video of your swing? Maybe you're not doing what you think you're doing.

Sounds like you are good golfer and probably athletic too.....so without seeing your swing, you may want to consider this:

Think of your swing as one fluid continuous motion with no distinction bwt. backswing and downswing. Your downswing for forward move to the ball begins with the lower body (feeling weight transfer from inside to rear foot- heel to the left, flexed knees moving forward, then hips rotating to full release). This move begins fractionally before you complete the full turning of your shoulders - whether it's 3/4 wedge shot or driver swing.

The best ball-strikers' swings (professional or amateur) will all show this type of transition which makes their swings look like one fluid motion rather than in pieces.......it's the transition (proper pivot motion) that really distinguishes golfers of all levels vs. other pros, amateurs, friends or whatever. The swing regardless of its shape (look) is athletic, efficient, and more easily repeated.

There are a couple of drills if you are interested that may help you eliminate your "getting on top of the ball to early.....
