Downswing: Unhinge right arm

I recently ran across an instructional article (source provided in an email) that explained the need to unhinge the right arm during the downswing so that the right arm is straight at impact. The discussion centered around creating right arm width and club head speed. The technique points out the need to start unhinging the right arm at the start of the downswing and then the motion of the left hip forward and back. The left arm is to be long.

During the Bridgestone Invitational yesterday, a SwingVision slomo of Tiger hitting out of the rough showed him doing exactly this...unhinging the right arm during the downswing with a straight right arm at impact. Thoughts?

The right arm trigger delay is perhaps one of the secrets of golf. The bend in the right arm should be maintained as long as possible before releasing.Every great player does this despite what they say they do.

If you believe that article, then go practise throw your right arm straight from the top and come back in 2 weeks and tell us your results.

Nice first post.

Thoughts?

Junk.

To do this without breaking your arm, the shaft, or both, your right shoulder would have to be so far away from the ball at impact, that it would be very difficult to have your shoulders open enough to balance out the plane line with your axis tilt.

Don't tell that to the guy that wrote that junk, it would jam his brain.

Perhaps you are correct...but if the right arm is hinged at the top and straight at impact, for me that's unhinging during the downswing...

Don't see the unhinging....as Brian said JUNK

I don't see it either. There is still some bend in the right arm but sometimes it's harder to tell from a front on view.

Now Tiger plays the ball with the driver well forward like most pros.To get your hands in front of the ball at impact with still a slight bend in the right arm,do you realise how much you need to retain the bend in the right arm deep into the downswing to even achieve that?

Most average players need to play the ball further back in the stance because they simply cannot retain enough right arm to get the hands in front of the ball at impact.

Here's a better clip of Tiger at 2000/FPS.

Your seeing what you want to see. His arm is obviously not completely straightened at impact. Maybe just past impact, but he isn't consciously doing it. Remember he is pivoting pretty hard.

OH YEAH...hardest most explosive pivot on the TOUR.

Here is Rory Mcilroy showing a bent right arm at impact.....pound for pound longer than Tiger.

Hilarious.

ej,

With a driver yoiur hands are not neccessarily ahead of the ball at impact, in fact the club and shaft are more likely to be in a straight line condition, with the clubhead attempting to pass the hands....

And retaining elbow bend at impact isn't that difficult if you have enough axis tilt and a reasonable pivot....

I think you will find most touring pros will still have some shaft lean with the driver albeit less than with the irons. Also don't forget good players generally play the ball more forward than average players because they can. This makes it doubly difficult to retain enough right arm.

You are correct that elbow bend is not that difficult if you have plenty of axis tilt and a good pivot.....the hard part to get right is the axis tilt and the good pivot!!
