drills for bottoming out past impact?

Anyone have any good tips for working on getting the bottom of the swing in front of the ball? I used to do this and compress the ball. But I've fallen off the wagon and am having a hard time getting back on.... Thanks.

Place 3 balls vertical 3 inches apart and hit the middle ball over and over till you get your divot in front of it,(Brian drill). works well....

If you are still having trouble with the drill that Joeparrr listed, I think Brian recommends leaving the middle ball out (don't actually hit a ball) and taking swings until you can successfully take your divots in front of the other two balls. You can then put the third ball back into this drill. You may have to go back and forth between using the third ball and not using it until you get consistent. I hope this helps.

Checking in.

If your divot is too far behind the ball...

1. You are swinging too far to the right.

2. You are trying to get under the ball and lift it.

3. Your arms/hands/club unit—the "Power Package" is FALLING from the top too early in the downswing.

why does swinging right...

Dear Brian,

Thanks for the response. I'm guilty of swinging too far right. But I'm curious as to why that would put the divot behind the ball? Help from anyone?

Best, Chris

Your chest is more closed when you swing more to the right and thus you move low point further back. That is why people who swing too far to the right like to play the ball well back in their stance.

If you move it up on them, they usually thin it.

Hit mid-irons out of a bunker with little or no lip.... to hit is solid, you'll need to hit all the points Brian mentions above.

Grabby astroturf seems to work too. My club's range has a strip of that stuff and when the tees are vulnerable, you practice off that horrible stuff. We had a problem a few years ago with our grass and we used that crap for 3 months. Boy was everyone good from fairway bunkers that year!

Hitting out of divots works too..
Also, if you are on the range, remove the rubber tee peg from the mat and place the ball in the tee hole and hit it from there....

For all the gang that is now hitting balls in a garage somewhere, like I am here in Montana, I think I found a way to work on the forward divot. First off I got this great mat, saw it on the golf channel, it's spring loaded, so you don't break arms, hands, shoulders and clubs, then I drew two chalk lines, one directly behind the ball and one 4 inches in front of the ball. Object being, miss the line behind the ball and take out the one in front of it. Let me know how it works for the rest of you in winter wonderland.

Where do you find this mat? Is there a website?

Ok...now I'm confused. The thought of holding my arms up while starting the downswing seems strange to me. Can you explain further Brian?
..

I think you'll find it means not using any arm action from the top (no pulling down)..
The relationship between the arms and shoulders remains the same..
Any movement of the arms is due solely to the action of the pivot, which, by the simple action of weightshift (onto the left foot), AND maintaining the swing center, causes the arms/hands to drop down below shoulder height..
