Driver vs. iron compression

Should you try and compress the ball with your driver (or a 3 wood) as much as with an iron? With the ball on a tee, I feel more of a sweeping motion as oppossed to a compression.

I think the amount of compression with a driver is the same for irons. The downward aspect of the driver swing won't be as steep as a wedge.

For a ball on the turf, the low point of the swing is actually slightly below the ground. When the ball is teed up, this moves the low point of the swing higher. You still hit down with the driver, but the angle isn't as steep.

Any ball sitting on the ground should be compressed against it, if possible (wet ground requires more precision, less margin for error because you can not put low point as far below the ground, you can not compress the ball).

Driver off the deck. You want some down, some compression.

Thanks EdStraker.
Yoda, I would love to hear your thoughts as the Dukenasty thread got me thinking about this topic. I would love to know the difference in approach to compressing the driver vs. the iron.
EDZ, thanks for the response but please reread my question and try to answer the question I asked.

Poor Edz, can't win for trying.

Clubface impact on the ball is compression regardless of whether it is on the ground or on the tee. It is the quality of impact that counts. A horizontal hinge on the sweet spot sustains the ball longer on the clubface and is the only perfect compression of the ball. The ball doesn’t not slide up and off the clubface, as with an angled hinge (not that this is a bad thing- just different), and travels the Line of Compression longer. A ball on the ground is no different then on a tee, the circle remains the same.

njmp - please stop insulting me. I am here to learn.

bcoak - 'as much as with an iron' - which iron? Not as much as a wedge, closer to a long iron.

You aren't here to learn, you want to be a golf god around here. And gee I thought I was defending you. And you didn't say pretty please.

NJMP--
You know, few months ago you sent me an email warning me that Ringer would be a rude, disruptive trouble maker when he posted. That has not been the case. You have been the rude, disruptive trouble maker. First with Ringer, and lately with EDZ. Your behaviour is an embarrassment to the game of golf. No matter how annoying you find someone (and, yes, Ed drives us all crazy), you can still be civil in your responses to him. You are the posterboy for childish behaviour here. :(

scary red face there efnef. Ed's quck at name calling check the replies. I try to be more subtle about it. Childish? Of course, this is a zoo. Matthew can write about sex acts, attack others moral fiber and he is fine?

I'm an embarrassment to the game of golf? What are you , a total wimp? Golf can embarrass itself fine enough without a few posts of mine to help.

And stop sending me email about your problems.

Hey, Leave Puck alone! He's not childish, he's a skimmer! He skims all the Bull sh-- off the top of Eds posts so you can get to the rest of it. Problem is, after he gets done skimming, theres usually nothing left of the post.

Someone give Ed a job, so he has less time to post. J?K Ed.

The motion with the longer Clubs definitely will Feel more sweeping than with the shorter Clubs, especially with the Ball played near Low Point (Teed or not). Though Impact remains a true Three-Dimensional Compression -- Down, Out and Forward -- the longer Club moves in an arc that is more shallow at its bottom. Also, any turf taken will be minimal given (1) the forward Ball Location; (2) a less steep Angle of Attack; and (3) the fact that the law of 'equal and opposite reaction' means that Impact will deflect the vertical Faces of the longer Clubs less Downward and more Backward than the lofted Faces of the shorter Clubs.
