Dusting off the clubs

Hello friends, I haven't touched a club in well over 2 months. Haven't really missed the game but it's probably because when I stopped I was playing terrible and was NOT having fun. Like many others here I expect, I can't play just for fun, I play for the competition. When I play with my friends I want to play well and beat them. I'm not a great golfer but I "think" I'm better than the average with tons of potential.

Anyways, the main reason I need to get back in the game is because I have 2 children that are very good at the game and I feel I need to just grind this damn thing out. I took the easy route and that's not teaching my children anything or helping them get better.

Here's my problem: I'm actually one of the few that didn't get better after having lessons with Brian. Don't get me wrong, I have total respect for him as a teacher but for some reason my game got worse. I video taped the lessons and watched them probably 50 times but still no luck. At the time I said "Enough!" I was completely LOST. If I took my kids golfing I just hit wedges and hit putts.

SOOO, what do I do to get back into this game? Do I watch my lessons again cuz I've done that. I really can't afford $600 dollars of more lessons. Do I start over and pop in a BManz DVD because I have all of them? Starting over it just seems like I flushed a lot of money down the drain. All I know is that I do love the game and I just want to play good.

Thoughts? Thanks

You do what we all do who can't afford to see Brian for live lessons. Pick a swing pattern, take some video, post it on here, and start working on the components one at a time. I stress the one at a time thing... don't think you'll get the entire pattern all at once! This was my error. I needed to just pick soft draw (the closest match to my moves already) and start with the foot work. Then I'm gonna tackle the backswing ... then the transition...then the toss... then the finish.

Finally feel like I'm making some progress and my swing is improving.

Best of luck to ya!

I think you should post up some video along with a description of what you and Brian worked on. With all the great instructors on here, someone should be able to help you sort it out. You won't have to start all over.

You sound like a junkie who cannot get enough of his fix to get him high anymore. I would suggest if your full swing feels like garbage when compared to what you know you are capable of doing...then go chipping, nothing feels better than knowing you've chipped it in when the ball is only half-way to the hole. Switch gears from 'fairways and greens' to 'grind baby grind' and just be patient, we all hit slumps, even the G.O.A.T.

hey Curtis

Actually, the two month break may be a good thing for you. What you need to do now that you're back is the million dollar question. One that is probably different for everyone. Personally, I'd probably go to the range and hit a bucket of balls. Hit every club in the bag and see if there is a consistent miss or a trend in your ball flight that you don't like. Be as objective as possible and don't try and fix anything now. Just hit some shots and see where they go. Focus on center club face contact and hitting it solid, not so much where it goes. Maybe even shoot a little video and look at a few good ones...then some bad ones.

Then, go home, have a cold drink, and make a plan. Don't feel like there is a deadline for getting where you want to be. (a HUGE issue for me). Divide and conquer is a way to itemize your priorities. Pick one or two things you want to fix and figure out if you need help doing it, or if you're better off on your own. Then just work on your game when you feel like working on it. Don't stress over it or beat yourself up. If you're not getting paid to play golf, then it should be something you look forward to doing...not something you feel like you HAVE to do. (another issue I deal with)

Obviously, I'm glad you're back, and my suggestions are based on my recent return so they may not actually be of much value for you since we all see life and golf in our own way. But, my approach has been good for me lately and it might give you a boost too.

Good luck man....and it's good to see you're hanging in there.

What are the specifics of your swing problems/ball flight/ misses etc. are you body position conscious to the point of club blackout(losing face control or path or both) or...? Fill us in.

Kick-ass take!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. After watching Rory today golf seemed fun again. Just gonna have to hit some balls and see what happens as I couldn't even tell you what my misses were when I quit. All I know is that it was my worst golf that I can ever remember. Time to embrace the grind.

Here's to Rory, calluses, and dirty clubs.........cheers.
