Elbow Pain During Lag Drill

After seeing how bad I was flipping, I'm really focusing on half swings with a FLW per CoFF. Swinging with hands maybe just above waist high and the results have been good...BUT...I really feel my right arm snapping straight at about 10:30 position after contact (ball is 12:00). I've developed a sore spot on the outside of my right elbow after roughly 200 40 yd pitches. I can only imagine what a full swing would cause. What am I over or underdoing?

you should see a doctor, that sound like golfers elbow. there are some great stretching exercises that a good physical therapist can give you to avoid injury. but at no point should you ignore or "play through" the pain. it could lead to serious and permanent issues.

You've probably snapped harder than what your body is ready for. And/or your grip and forearm muscles are a bit weak which is the same thing really.

If it's on the outside of the elbow then it's probably lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). Do a search and you'll find plenty of stretches. Ice the areas 3-5 min at least daily. Also do plenty of right pectoral stretches- (this is often left out). Make sure your pivot is driving the action not your arms.

As a follow up, I'm trying the motion in CoFF where Brian is making short swings into the turf to ingrain the feeling of lag pressure with a FLW.

When I'm doing this, the club is brushing the grass so I'm certainly shallower than Brian. I also have the right thumb off the grip (as suggested by others here) and that has helped. The ball is really jumping off the club with minimal effort so I think I'm getting it but it's that point after impact where the arms go straight that in my case the momentum causes a harsh SNAP in the right elbow.

I really focus on relaxed arms and hands. Can I be TOO relaxed?
Could this just be a short swing phenomenon? Would a longer swing carry the arms more around (with less elbow snap) than a shorter down and out swing?
Am I just quitting on the follow through too soon?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm trying my butt off and this is a major obstacle for me. At this point, I'd rather be a healthy hacker than an injured player.

"Can I be TOO relaxed?"

Yes, you can - the elbows shouldn't repeatedly snap and possibly hyperextend- even with a relaxed arm there needs to be a small amount of muscle tone.

Similar to throwing a punch in martial arts you fully extend your arm but you don't repeatedly snap it because it's a great way to really aggravate your tendons. So perhaps focus on arms being relaxed but not dead. In the meantime probably ice more frequently.

Probably don't need to see the doctor for tendonitis. The drill caused an overuse injury and your elbow is paying for it. Don't do the drill for two weeks, let your elbow heal, take some motrin, and then return to the drill. Start slow and do 50 pitches, not 200.
