Elbow pain

if you dig really deep divots or expend a lot of energy into the ground you could be redirecting stress to the elbow. or you could be hyperextending the elbow. or you could have ok mechanics but just play alot of golf. the golf swing isn't a natural motion. humans werent designed to make these moves. look at tiger, even he puts such force on his left knee that he has had 3 surgeries on it. if you have pain, give it a rest for a few days. if the pain doesn't go away go see a doctor.

first culprit would be too tight a grip/wrong grip etc - so check it -Brian has a great article on the grip! - make sure it's right

2nd- have you started hitting a lot more balls recently? Weekend warrior syndrome applies to golfers too. Early in the season you've got to let the muscles and tissues strengthen up.

3rd- check your posture and especially your shoulders- if you have a little rounded shoulder posture then you can overstress your elbows. As a stretch and a great shoulder check - lie on the floor and do a snow angel (just like you were in the snow)-keep the elbows FLAT!. You should be able to have your hands touch above your head and NOT feel any pressure in your chest or arms or neck. i.e you shouldn't have to work to keep the elbows down. If you do then you've got some homework. ;)

Pain on the outside of the elbow is lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
Pain on the inside (closer to your body) of the elbow is medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow) but ultimately it doesn't matter. If it hurts it hurts.

Look at your grip, your posture, get stronger in your forearms/grip, improve your pivot. Also don't hit balls if you wince when you make contact- it will screw up your game.

Interesting timing for this thread, as I was just noticing some forearm pain, but it's in my LEFT arm, not my right.

After a positively awful round last week, I went back to the full NSA pattern with twistaway. I realised that because I was playing so much, my renewed confidence actually had me back to timing the flip. My problem is that I am pretty good at timing the flip, so it's easy to revert.

Played the last two mornings with full twistaway and can't believe how much better I'm compressing the ball (I realise that may only be a feel, but as a feel it's very much real). But after the round this morning I noticed a bit of tenderness in my left forearm (not the elbow). I assume it's just from the 'torque' applied with twistaway, but should I be worried?

As someone who's getting over a major neck injury, i'd recommend any golfer (anyone actually) to check out the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue.

I was staring a major surgery to remove a disc in my neck. 12 weeks down the line i'm 95% recovered and playing golf again with no surgery.

There is a specific chapter on sports related injuries/exercises for particular sports.

Basically pain is caused by you stressing something abnormally (like twisting an ankle) or by an imbalance/weakness being shown up by a particular motion causing you pain by compensating to avoid the motion.

Or hitting zillions of balls with the force that Mr Woods does.

I personally used the Egoscue website for therapy and uploaded pictures and I get specific exercises to correct my posture.

I can't speak highly enough of this method for injury/pain treatment.

I developed golfer's elbow in my right arm several years ago. It was probably caused by too much practice early in the season when it was cold. Drugs (NSAIDs) and ice did not alleviate the condition. The pain didn't subside until I stopped playing for several months the following winter. During that period, I went on a exercise program (forearm exercises and curls) to strengthen my elbows and have not had this problem since. I also stretch my forearm muscles prior to practicing or playing golf. There is a good web site describing golf warm up exercises.

Interestingly, I have seen several LPGA players use these forearm exercises prior to warming up.
