Elkington swing

Got home tonight and was watching the PGA finish. Watching Elkington, and was wondering if he's still using a pure swing procedure? Anyone know?

It seemed like his right forearm was more on plane than other pros (esp compared to Love and Phil). Definitely slings the club with his pivot. When he had to hit out of that divot, thought of Brian's favorite drill. Kostis (I think) stated that Elk hits really down with his wedges, which almost helped him to win the PGA.

Does anyone know of recent swing pics for him?

Elk's rotation and rythmn are beautiful things to witness.
What do you think caused the snap hook on 18?
Does it look to you like his body sometimes sinks as he comes to impact?
Redgoat,
What do you see in his practice swings that identifies Mr.Bennett as his coach?

I watched him at Pinehurst for several hours and I know Mr. Bennett. That practice swing is very identifyable. The most noticable aspect is the deliberate upper body lean towards the target( looks like a reverse pivot), right shoulder very high and soft arms attached to the body.

IMO, the hooks on 17 and 18 were caused by a serious hang back through impact. A problem he has always fought...

probably reverted back to hanging back do to pressure or trying to get some extra yards. That's when I hang back trying to get a few extra.

He takes it back and leans towards the target - "stay left." Then he pauses at the top (you could see this in his practice stroke before a fairway bunker shot late in the tournament), and left his arms at the top and leaned toward the target with his upper body.

From the top, I believe he wants everything moving towards the target. No head movement backwards, hips forward, shoulders turning as though they feel very horizontal. His takeaway looked very right forearm controlled, then turn from the top, hold off the face, and saw off the finish. Is he hitting a cut now? I forgot to look when I saw him a couple weeks ago.

Below the plane on #18...I have it on tiVo.

At the PLAYERS championship this year, Elk looked to ME to have his hands too low, his hands too forward and his left wrist too bent at the top.

He was doing NONE of that on his way to a 2nd place finish.

He is using a different hinge/swivel (more cut-off) than Ben had him doing.

These guys got some good pub on TV and they deserve it.

It does look MORE Ben and LESS MORAD though.

Maybe these guys are better teachers than Mac.

...but...HE DOES NOT MAKE A REAL BACKSWING ANYTHING LIKE THAT PRACTICE SWING.

Brian,

Agree completely about the below plane comment on 18. I also completely agree with his practice swing vs. real swing discrepency. Maybe they are better teachers than Mac, or maybe Elk has a ton of talent and could play regardless of the instruction.

Hope all is well,

Brady

Mac knows a lot...does it make him a good teacher?...Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer know a lot....Do they have great people skills?

Yes....Can Mike Bennett do what he teaches ...

Yes...that's why guys like Elk, TAIII,Greg Norman...etc...listen...they see a guy(Bennett) who can do what he preaches...

How do I know...I grew up playing golf with Bennett...we both learned from O'Grady...and then he worked and live with us in NC...

He's really good...especially with people...

Just like the "Italian Stallion"

Another vote for the "Golf Instructor US OPEN"

Bennett and I are friends from junior golf...I'm from upstate originally ... approximatley 39 milesnorth of the 'cuse. Bennett worked for me a t Pine Needles in 2001...I'm glad he's doing well...The exaggerated practice Swing is a Bennett trademark...remember it is only an exagggerated feel to aquire some sort of feel to keep the shoulders on the "rotated" shoulder plane which IS compatible with "less shift in the backstroke pivot and Pitch basic stroke...Elk has always had trouble with his head and upper spine moving Up and Back too early...thus the need for the exaggerated practice stroke...how do I know ?...You ask ..I was on the phone with Bennett Monday Morning of the PGA Championship and he was giving me a "debriefing" of what's going on ..you know inside the ropes sort of stuff!!!

PS... I wish I was a fly on the wall for Brian, Ben , and Lynn's gathering...some serious stuff gonna happen there!!!

Hands too low

Im 6'2,
I stand nest to elk and his hands are 3'' lower.
I would like to see him get his left arm out more from the top, to 5 with his COG.
But at LA this year he was hitting a CF ( slight 5yrd draw)
But he won the open doing that with Mac so ummmm...

As for Mike and Andy great guys been to at least 50 schools and have worked with alot of guys with Mac, until the split after the Big Lumber in 04.

Im not in the middle of the whole thing but I will look at it from a possitive side.
If any TGM or Morad students win on tour its a big win for all of us and golf.
I also like seeing Mac out playing again, it makes me misty eyed.

Dean Wilson won didn't he? Was that a big win for MORAD?
BTW, I didn't know he was taught by Bennett and Plummer. But when I watch him practice it looks like his arms get behind him very early in the backswing. Is that normal for the swing they teach?
