I dont care what anyone thinks of Mickelson, but anyone with enough confidence to have the flag attended from 80yds and then almost fly it in on the last hole of a PGA Tour event has my utmost respect. Thats off the charts skill and what you should expect when you pay for a ticket.

Best wedge player. Maybe best overall short game day in/out. Just over $60 million tour earnings. Chance to win.

Stones puff up.

I like him. And ya- if he bombed on the shot he'd be open to all kinds of people thinking he was a dope. There no doubt are still people saying that. He figured it would help him, and ya man- probably likes puttin on a bit of a show too. Good for him. (really)

Funniest thread title ever.

Do you think he laid up to try and put extra pressure on Bubba? I had company over so I wasn't paying close attention but I thought they said he had 226 left on his second shot. Did he say afterwards what he was thinking?

Kevin U said it well! Best imagination, visualizer, and overall wedge player on the planet!! Definitely entertaining to watch his uncanny skill

Spmurph, not sure if you are asking what he was thinking about on the 2nd or the third shot, but this is PM's post round interview transcript:

ASAP Sports - Golf - 2011 - FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN - January 30 - Phil Mickelson

Yea, that's what I was asking. I read another article on ESPN that stated the same thing.

Why would the ball come out dead with a hybrid but hot with a wood? Sorry, but I am still a novice about how lies effect ball flight with different clubs.

I love ESPN's headline for about 24 hours

"Lefty falters, Bubba wins"

So Mickelson shoots 69 in pretty tough conditions which tied the 7th best round of the day, finished birdie birdie yet loses to a guy who shoots 67 and if you go back to Saturday played his last 20 holes 8 under.........and basically its saying you choked?

I hate the media.

it sounds like the desired area of landing in his guesstimate is in between those 2 clubs. he probably weighed the risk of either of that to be greater than laying up and going with a wedge. fowler did something like that not long ago where people questioned him afterwards.

they just went with what they felt the most comfortable i think. that is why they are pros:)

What I really love is how they criticized him for laying up. Seems like no matter what he chooses to do they question it. When he plays super aggressive they call him reckless.
Had he tried to hit the hybrid and hit it in the water Faldo would have crucified him. Bubba made the great birdie.

Bubba made a great "putt" for birdie, but isn't it amazing how difficult it is to hit a stock 6 iron into a huge green when you're used to twirling it all day long?

I'm sure exactly what he meant either, but perhaps he was referring to his equipment's characteristics.

First, I'd note he lost a lot of distance on that drive, and he wasn't where he was supposed to be.

Second, it sounded to me like his 3w was one intended to be long and hot, not so much the lie. Maybe not his WITB 15* on his website.

Third, the hybrid at 22* probably wasn't enough particularly with a fade, and hooking offered no bargain.
