I would be interested in knowing opinions of Ernie's swing now compared to, say, 1992-4. Is it crazy to say it was not only better, but MUCH better then. To me, it seems very steep and open going back, underneath approaching, with a ton of hand action as the club goes high and out to the right, even on knockdowns. Any thoughts?

I think you're on to something!

His club face is definitely more open half way back. He is turning his left hand too much too soon.

I presume he is copying what Tiger currently does despite it being counter productive.

When Tiger makes changes to his swing the other players and coaches take note even if they don't admit it.

Haney came up with this over active forearm rotation (Pure Junk) and our old friend Lead probably thought to himself, if it's good enough for Tiger.

After all he tried to convert Michelle Wie to stack and tilt for Christ's sake.

Is there any cure for lead poisoning.

I could be wrong, but I thought he worked with Robert Baker now. Either way, you're right. Pop teachers are always trying to keep up with trends rather than deal with the individual. It's a shame, even with 3 majors I think with the early lead poison this is a case of what might have been. It's easy to forget how he blew fields away Tiger-style in the early 90's.

Since others have ignored the heading, I will too.

Leadbetter never has and never will teach the Haney method of plane. The shape and plane of Tiger's swing compared to Ernie's swing could not be more different.

Leadbetter believes in an early set with the shaft pointing between the feet and the ball at the 9:00 position - a very upright setting of the shaft. Leadbetter has moved away from teaching the Faldo-Price reroute in recent years. This is an improvement but now this type of swing is more conducive to standing close to the ball, which Ernie is doing now, and drawing the ball becomes more difficult due to the steepness.

In the Haney model, the shaft would be pointing about a foot outside the target line at the 9:00 position.

Ernie is not trying to copy anything that Haney has put into Tiger's swing. It would ruin him for years if he did.

I am more than familiar with the swing theories of Haney and Leadbetter.

I never said that he was trying to copy Haney's theory of parallel planes, just the excessive forearm rotation in the early stages of the back swing.

I just love Lead bashing.

Has Lead got the ugliest swing of all the golf instructors you have ever seen.

You would think he'd try to apply some of his knowledge to his own game.

All good posts, but I was hoping to get some manzella staff technical input on the topic. I'm just fascinated how his instructors could take someone so naturally gifted and really never get rid of the pull that plagued him early on. Now, if anything, it's a pull hook and blocks.
