Fixed my flipping - some swing thoughts

I got on the course this morning very reluctant. My buddies needed a fourth badly so they coaxed me to go out even though I've been shanking my irons badly as I've been trying to fix my timed flip manuever. I wasn't expecting much but I did notice some things in my video session at the range recently and brought these key swing thoughts with me to the course.

1) Keep my head centered in my stance in my backswing

I was overdoing the head swaying movement during my backswing. This promoted a hip slide manuever at the top as the first move of my transition thereby necessating my timed flip in order to hit a decent shot.

2) Create width on the takeaway

This is one of things that TGM has opened my eyes to- the concept of a hand controlled pivot. I've always used my shoulders to start the takeaway. Now, I use my right hand and take my arms out as far as I can to create width on the backswing.

3) Stay narrow on the downswing.

When I first tried to create "lag" in my swing, I was all focused on the PP#3 and trying to hold off my swing. What I realized now is that with the proper takeaway and pivot, I need to use all the strength I have to rotate back to ball (could this be what Brian was referring to as the pivot powered hand controlled pivot?). My right arm naturally stays back until the pivot brings me back to the ball.

All I can say is wow. I didn't "flip" or shank a single shot today and I could really feel my lower back and abs working. I had no idea how much of your core is required in a golf swing.

The only part of my full swing which was frustrating today was driving. I think I was overswinging which probably led to some hip sliding and coming under the plane leading to some big push slices.

All in all, a very encouraging day. Thanks to the knowledge on this board. I'm a newbie to golf and TGM so advance apologies if this stuff is nonsensical or just common sense.
