Fixing an off-plane downswing

I'll never leave hacker land until I fix this. On video, I see that I have the typical hacker's "over the top", too steep downswing. Brian, and other experts, can you please recommend a drill, swing thought or training aid that would help me eradicate this?

What I've tried recently has been to hold back my right shoulder until I transfer my weight to my front foot. Unfortunately, I found that this brought back the deaded topped and fat shots that I had finally succeeded in eliminating from my game, so the "cure" for my OTT swing is worse than the disease. At least I had a fairly repeatable OTT swing; now my vertical swing radius is all screwed up.

I don't care if I get TGM help, or "regular" help, but I sure would appreciate any help that you can provide. Thanks in advance,

I have found that the only thing that stops me from an OTT move is keeping my mind in my hands and concentrating on taking them no higher or farther back then my right shoulder, which to me feels like a 3/4 swing, but to others it looks like a normal position.

I don't think you should think about the hands at all. Most people go over the top, cast, or whatever because they want to hit the ball so badly that they use their hands too much. Try taking some practice swings with a broom ( a nice thick one ) to get the feeling of lag and hearing the swish after impact.

YIKES!!!!!

Gumper....and others....

99% of EVERYONE who 'comes over the top,' comes over the top for THE SAME REASON...

THEY HAVE TO!

They are trying to get the ball to start left-er. Got it?

The CURE is to FIX the CLUBFACE.

FIX the clubface?

Yes.

How?

By FIRST, not opening it too much on the backswing. Unless you are Bobby Jones, the clubface hanging tow down at the top is like water on wood, NO GOOD.

Flatten the left wrist, and while you are at it, make sue the heel pad of your left hand is on top of the club.

The clubface should look about 45° to the ground at the top....or MORE skyward.

On the downswing, make sure you are LAGGING THE SWEETSPOT, in other words, turn the face off of the plane sooner—or right away.

Hit down on the ball and turn your WHOLE LEFT ARM first toward your left hip, and then—still flat—toward the ground.

Notice literalists that I said "toward the ground."

Again 45° would be fine.

NOW IF YOU COME OVER THE TOP, YOU'LL HIT IT LEFT OF TED KENNEDY.

So you won't.

Report back. ;)

Isn't that what I said? :D:D I do hit it left of Ralph Nader on occasion when things go bad. I never go right.

I would suggest Brian's Never Slice Again video for clubface control, and the fiddle drill in the Confession of Former Flipper video for clubhead control. The fiddle drill really shows you show the right shoulder and the hands move down ON PLANE instead of OTT. Good luck.

"NOW IF YOU COME OVER THE TOP, YOU'LL HIT IT LEFT OF TED KENNEDY."

I live in MAss. and I don't think that is possible. :)

Brian,

I completely get what you are saying about the backswing, but I'm confused about the downswing:

"On the downswing, make sure you are LAGGING THE SWEETSPOT, in other words, turn the face off of the plane sooner-or right away."

I just experimented with the downswing in my living room, but I just can't figure out what you mean by either part of the sentence that I quoted. What exactly do I need to do to turn the face off of the plane?

Could you please elaborate on this one sentence? Thank you *very* much.

Want to eliminate the slice and come over? Place the ball on the left shoulder with the driver, angle the upper body to the right as you pivot back with the hips rotating and "feeling" left of their start point, position the club face as Brian as talked about. A club face fix rarely cures plane issues unless it is built upon a foundation of proper ball position and pivot fundamentals.

The pivot has no idea what the clubface angle is and futhermore, the pivot has never hit a shot magically. Brian is right, fix the clubface, grip postion and fix the problem period...
