Flat Shouler Turn in 09

Great question, Birdie_man. I'd really like to hear what Brian has to say, since, for me, a flattish NSA shoulder turn seems to work a lot better than a SD steeper shoulder turn.

seems to me if you wanna generate alot of power from ur pivot, a flat shoulder turn lets you "wind" up behind the ball better

IMO that's just a feel thing and something i have to explain to players that i get to use a steeper turn. In a lot of cases that "wind up" you are feeling is very close to, if not, a sway to the right.

Unless you are extremely inflexible you should be able to generate the same amount of shoulder turn in degrees whether you go flat or steep.

Wait... so is he dead or not?

is this like the beatles thing?

Hehe.

I'm still kickin it.

No computer + working every single day + sinus infection that won't go away = Paul (luaP) has been lump on sofa for what time he has off.

+ not much golf. :(

(les weather et terrible!!)

I have been using a flatter shoulder turn during the time I have been able to play.

Just wondering about it cause Brian does not seem to mention it much now outside NSA. I observe that a backswing with a flat shoulder turn and no popout will give you a pretty flat armswing.

But David Toms does play well. :)

I hope to play tomorrow.

evila si luaP.

:)

HI birdie,

I am presently working my way out of a flat shoulder turn...

I have found it is caused by no, or very little compression of the left side on the backswing, which leads to the high left shoulder, especially if you stand pretty upright at address...

I am working on my first takeaway move being to compress the left side, thereby tilting the spine to the right (bottom of spine points outside the right foot, and conversely the left shouder drops more)......then I simply turn clockwise around my right hip, while maintaining the compression...

So far so good....:)

I have had great success going back to a FST recently...

Without switching my grip or using a lot of twistaway in the backswing it is the only way I can draw it and fade it reliably.

Because...

I cannot seem to get a full roll (in the downswing) working well for me with a Rotated Shoulder Turn. (steeper shoulder turn ala SD)

I don't know why ATM but is anyone else like this?

BTW new video coming...

Constantino Rocca(ish) pattern is destroying it right now.

(good on all shots and all through the bag actually which is very exciting)

(I usually am a multi-pattern switching OCDer)

Level or Flat

For me, the important question is, what signals the player that they cannot make a "level" turn and need to "flatten" it. The SD pattern and its intended result can be enticing but how many can keep the right shoulder "on plane" as they complete the back stroke? Players who work with an instructor may have less concern than those using the instructional DVD's for self teaching.
