Flipper: With the putter (too)

When I putt the whole putter tends to move back and I tend to flip at it to get back to the ball. It is better in long putts where there is probably some body movement helping rythym but shorter putts (15 ft and in) I have a hard time not flipping. I am trying to keep the butt of the putter pointing at my mid section which seems to help but I am having varying success doing this on a consistent basis.
Any Flipper advice for putting?

Two suggestions

I had a similar problem. Hopefully the following suggestions help.

I had a lesson with Brian back in May and we reviewed my putting stroke. Brian told me that I set up set up to the ball with mid-body hands and began my putting stroke with a forward press; all good. On the back swing I moved the grip end of the putter back towards the center of my body. According to Brian, what I should be doing instead is keep the handle pointing where it was when I completed my forward press and swing the putter head back. I have always been a fairly good putter but now I feel even more confident and feel like I am hitting the ball more solidly more consistently. The key point here is to focus on swinging the putter head and not the grip end of the putter. The grip end should stay pointing forward while it is the putter head which moves back.

My second suggestion is to buy Stan Utley's book, "The Art of Putting." This is probably the best book on putting I have seen. I got this after my lesson with Brian and found that it reinforces exactly what Brian told me during my lesson. As a bonus, in my opinion, it reinforces TGM principles.

yips

I putt left hand low and have the yips now does that mean I have to putt the regular way. Oone of my main problems is I think I got my putter lined up to my line and my buddies tell me I`m off 2 to 3 inches . I think I`m set up square right eye dominant and I have my right eye over the ball left of center. Opinions??

On the forward stroke, did BM recommend that you keep the butt end pointing where it was and then 'releasing' the putterhead past that point, or would you the move the hands forward as you made the forward swing?

I have been struggling with putting for most of the year and I believe it is because I am trying to move the putter by moving my hands instead of letting my hands react to the swinging weight of the putter head.

I find that on short putts (4' or less) that when I try to move the putter by moving my hands, I cannot get the putter head or my hands to go past the ball. No problem on longer putts when there is enough momentum to follow thru.

I think I should just move the putter head back by either pushing the shaft back with the left hand, pulling the shaft back with the right hand or a combination of both and then just let the putter head swing forward without 'trying' to move my hands - just any backward or forward movement of the hands just be response to the momentum of the putter head,

This will cause the putter head to 'pass' the hands at some point past impact if done correctly.

Thoughts welcome from one and all -

Yips are due to changing your mind AFTER you have begun the stroke.

make a decision, or decisions (line and amplitude of stroke) AND STICK WITH THEM REGARDLESS. IF YOU HAVEN'T MADE UP YOUR MIND BEFORE YOUR STROKE, DO NOT MAKE IT. THEN EXECUTE WHAT YOU DECIDE - WITH ATTENTION.

Putting lesson: five seconds: take pains.

Bruce,

Yes, you keep the hands ahead of the putter head just like in a normal swing. Also, just like in a normal swing the club is swung on plane. After impact the club moves to the inside but on plane.

I really can't recommend Stan Utley's book, "The Art of Putting" enough. There are a number of pictures where he shows the putting stroke that he teaches and how the club moves on plane.

Best regards.

I was playing with this last night on the practice green.

I was putting more consistently when my hands lead the putterhead through the stroke-lag.

Seemed to work better for shorter putts though.
