Forearm at impact

At impact the right forearm should be in line with the shaft right?

What would happen if the forearm is above the shaft or below the shaft at impact?

I think that if the right forearm is below the shaft at impact, then ballflights will tend to be very straight (see Furyk, Jim or Garcia, Sergio). If the right forearm is well above the shaft, then the ball will have a tendency to curve a lot more to the left or right.

I don't believe that is a maxim at all. Plenty of the worlds best have a steeper shaft than the trailing forearm at impact and vice versa

Interesting question! I understood, from my brief intersection with TGM, that lining up the right forearm with the shaft was the way to support the club through impact, to create the heavy hit, and/or to sustain the line of compression. If there is, as MJ in the release thread argues, at least in the best swings, no force against the shaft at impact, and thus no heavy hit or sustained line of compression, how would it make a difference to have the forearm lined up, above or below, the shaft at impact?

It doesn't make any difference. There is a good story on here from Brian about trying to get David Toms to look more like the TGM ideal, right forearm on plane at impact etc. David was getting beaten by a lesser player and David told Brian something like "but I bet it looked great on video"....

Lindsey,

Would you agree that vertical handpath = right forearm below shaft and horizontal handpath = right forearm above shaft?

On the MAT-T system, like the one at Damon Lucas' Institute at Lake Presidential, you can make a wire frame out of any part of the body.

Then you can put the virtual camera inside of that part, and "look" in any direction you want and play through the swing.

We did it with the right forearm of many players, and all we could do was giggle.

That damn forearm is pointing all over Dodge.

Silliness.
