Forward Press

Hi all, I started to forward press before I start my backswing. This seems to slow me down and turn more between my neck and shoulder. I have a tendacy to take the club inside to much. Also from a dead stop address position, I can't just start the swing. My question is is this bad to do, the forward press???and how much forward is okay....thanks

I don't like it because it doesn't really preview the impact postion - it's just sort of a partial approximation of the true impact fix. Also, depending on how close you sole the clubhead to the ball, there is the danger of touching the ball or causing it to move.

Well until I get comfortable in turning, I will use this system unless you have other suggestions. It really works great with the driver. I need to Feel the turn back, until I do I am lost.......

Don't listen to those who say it is wrong to do. Part of Do It Right, Brian suggests it as an option, and he uses it in his shots. If it works for you, then there is your answer. Apparently old tijme golfers used it all the time.

I like using it when I am getting into a rut. The only reason I don't use it all the time is that my lower body sometimes gets overactive on the backstroke and slides a bit to the right, thereby causing a slight slice. However, the forward press will let me load up onto my right side more than from a static atartup.

I didn't say it was "wrong", only that I prefered not to do it. I have other reasons. In the normal address position with the clubhead soled, with or without a forward press, the subconscience wants to return the clubhead to this address position, which causes a fat shot. The clubhead must come into the ball higher, at the impact fix position. Doing a forward press with the clubhead soled, can give the subconscience the false impression of an impact fix.

My last reservation against the forward press is that it's doubtful a player can do exactly the same amount of "forward" from shot to shot.

Thanks Mizuno Joe, but for the sole purpose of taking it back correctly doesn't it help???? ala the Ben Doyle video on this site. Take a look, Ben forwards press............thanks

swingE2W,

I agree there is the benefit of getting started from a static position. I've never had a problem getting started using the right forearm to trace the plane line, while bending the right wrist.

On the upcoming Buick Open and US Open telecasts, notice how few, if any, players do a forward press.

Some problems this CAN cause are: When the hands move forward, the club face opens up, which also exacerbates the common problem of taking the club back inside. Another swing "starter" that could be used is to move the right knee directly towards the left knee and begin the swing. This gets the swing started, and puts the right leg in a good bracing position that limits swaying.

Thanks for all your help. I notice how all the pro's, it seems that there right arm bends right away. That is my problem. I feel that my right arm doesn't bend that quick. At the Buick Open my friend played in the pro am. He was playing with Loren Roberts.........r

Mikestloc tells ALL of his students who forward press (including his 4 kids) to RETURN to center (Address) after the forward press.

I like the way it give a head start to the people who need it.
