Ive watched confessions, and i try the whole pivot thing with the left shoulder and i am not having luck with it. as far as chips and short pitches, it works good. but for some reason i cant translate it into the full swing aspect. i either get popups or shanks. definatley shanks with wedges. pop ups with my driver. my irons suck too. one thing i can feel is that my hands keep on flippin, when i reach my follow thru my right wrist is flat and my left is bent. i dont know what to do. im not sure if i am hitting or swinging, when i try to do the forearm roll after impact its a low hot hook, or a high pull. My ball flight has always been high, probably do to the fact i flip it at the bottom, but i have managed to become a good player none the less. i can consistantly shoot in the mid to low 70s, but i am looking to improve my swing, and have been struggling trying to learn how to do it right. any suggestions?

Sounds like a pretty open clubface......OTT some.....no tilt....and flip.....(pop ups, shanks)......

I wouldn't worry about Hitting or Swinging right now.

You need some lag and tilt to do the full roll w/o hooking it.

Ya it's flipping for sure anyway.

You seem to know that tho....and the lefts w/ full roll, high ballflight, pop-ups (the clubhead basically dive bombs towards the ground when you flip.....change of radius.....so you get misses low and high on the face erratically)....all point to it.

...

Get setup right first...

And grip:

...

And you gotta get rid of that flip somehow.

Swinging with a more closed clubface for a while is always a good way...learn how to hit it well like that...like the Twistaway.

If you do it right you should be able to hit it straight....with no fear of hooking it really......and with a trajectory that isn't overly low too. (you'll hit it low and left at first....clubface closes from flipping + little Axis Tilt)

You can do this for training...it's a good way cause with the clubface like this (like a Twistaway backswing....i.e. Trevino....neutral grip tho) you'll have to sustain lag. Have to. Or you hook.

With a more open clubface you CAN flip it in the downswing (unless you full roll it thru Impact).....and again, with a more closed clubface you CAN'T. (or else HOOKS)

Good luck.

There's lots of good stuff in "Confessions of a Former Flipper" btw....drills, advice, etc....to learn to have lag. (in every swing....normally....without "trying at all")

RyanB, keep at it. It took me three months to get out of the phase you are in right now. I took three lessons with Brian which certainly help the most, but the two things that seemed to pull me out of the slump you are in at the moment is "maintaining axis tilt" and "hitting the box" with the logo of my golf glove looking at the target.

TGM experts correct me if I'm wrong, but you can have a flat left wrist and bent right wrist and still shank the ball if Accumulator #3 doesn't turn through impact?

Beware of what "maintaining axis tilt" and "hitting the box" with the logo of my golf glove looking at the target is gonna create to your swing in the future.

You no longer "swing the club" by intending to do things other than "swinging the club".

You only need to load and sustain the "lag" and the "law" will release it.

I feel your pain

I rarely post but I've been where you are just a short time ago and thought I'd offer this. The key for me to really getting it working was to keep that torso rotating while the axis was tilted. Any quitting with the rotating body prior to impact resulted in a flip.

Good Luck

are there any drills or mental images that could help me?
For drills try basic motion. Achieve this satisfactorily and move on to aquired motion. Only when you have mastered that move on to the full swing.

There ARE NO SHORT CUTS. However, it may help if you practise swinging into a wall or other flat fixed object. This, at least, will demonstrate the value and achievement of the flat left, and bent right, wrists.

There's Hertz, and then there's NOT EXACTLY.

It would seem that learning to have a Flat Left Wrist at and through impact would help EVERYBODY, and help them right away.

Nope.

If you can't square the clubface up when you are FLIPPING, then NOT FLIPPING/b] could make it worse.

How did I learn this?

The same way I learned everything else that isn't in "the book," by teaching for living with ZERO SUPPLY of students.

This was a BIG PART of my talk at The First TGM Teaching Summit last year.

Knowing what to FIX FIRST is why I am a better teacher today then I was 15 years/10 years/ 5 years ago/ or even last year.

But, I make mistakes all the time and I adjust.

That is why there is no subsitute for live lessons from a teacher who is actually TEACHING YOU, not preaching to you.

I will try to do a free video that has a little test you can take to find out what video program of mine you need FIRST.

much better

well i did what you said brian, i worked on the stuff in never slice again, and i taped my swing. i have a real good positon at the top. on the way thru my hands flip still and seems i am swinging out to the right because my follow thru looks off plane. i hit the ball ok though, a lot more consistant. should i work on pivot or hittin the box to fix the poor and postion at impact. or should i focus on swing more left of impact to keep it on plane?

Ryan,
I just started doing something brian perscribed for me long ago, swinging left. For ME when i started swinging left it was imperative that I looked and directed pressure point #3 1-2 dimples on the inside quadrant. If I just swing left while looking at the back of the ball I will hit pulls
good luck in the search

When you do the above, where is the ball going?

not as high, maybe a little left of where im aiming, but for the most part straight, and sounds a lot more crisp.
