Man, that list is messed up. Muncie, IN was ranked really high...I live about 20 min. from there, and there's only about 2 courses in the whole town!

Interesting list based on????

Having grown up playing quite a lot of golf in Anchorage, and San Francisco, as well as many other areas, I must say I don't get what they are basing this on?

I don't know how Monterey, California, home of the Pebble Beach courses, isn't anywhere in the top 100 (if it's even listed at all). The Pebble Beach courses aren't the only nice courses in the area either. I have to admit, whenever I go to that area, I feel like I am in "golf country".

Population per HOLE. This is soooooo bogus. Not golfers per hole or rounds played per course. But general population per hole. This puts urban centers very low- like mine. NJ/NY/PA loses as does San Diego, LA and San Francisco. Tell me SD doesn’t have happy golfers. The only problem with my area in NJ is too many private courses. But we have a bunch of great ones and a few good munis too.

The survey was based on a few factors, value(green fees), accessibility(number of courses available), quality and some other factors. Big metro areas like NY, LA, SF Bay area have high green fees and not many courses in proportion to the population, so they don't score high in the rankings. Also, the time to play a round is usually 5+ hours.

It is hard to beat the quality of the courses in the Monterey area, but the high green fees on the peninsula knock its rating down.

Auburn/Opelika, Alabama was ranked #1. I visit there often as my daughter is a student at Auburn. The Robert Trent Jones facility there (Grand National) is spectacular, but the 2 public courses are very average. The Auburn University Club is a great course but is private (but can get on if you stay at the Auburn University Hotel). It's really a wonderful area, but #1??? Dr Dave

My hometown. Probably taking in consideration of all the small towns around Muncie. Agree though there are only a couple of nice courses.

The Players club in Yorktown is really nice but again its not in Muncie!

Bloomington, IN, and Muncie, IN ranked ahead of Lafayette, IN is a joke!

lol - it's funny cuz I drive AWAY from Muncie to play golf

I would drive away from Muncie to play golf, too! Where do you normally play in that area?

I just moved back up in this area, so I haven't found a favorite up here yet (nor have I had a ton of time to play). If I had to pick, I would choose Walnut Creek/Club Run in Upland, but mostly because it's cheap, and I played it some when I was in college. I usually head south to hamilton county or Indy if I want to play somewhere nice. I really like Bear Slide, and Purgatory is also nice (but tough!); Fox Prairie in Noblesville is my favorite for the price, and I play Smock every once in a while. There are several other great courses in Hamilton County, but I can't afford to play most of them regularly! :) Players Club near Muncie is a nice course.

Purgatory and Bear Slide are two courses I have wanted to play for a long time, I just never seem to be able to make it out of Ft Wayne to play golf without my wife giving me all kinds of grief. Are they worth listening to my wife for a month?

Absolutely. Bear Slide is my favorite; parts of it are like Purgatory (links look) and other parts are heavily wooded. I need to be careful recommending purgatory, though...the last guy I recommended it to came back beaten and hasn't played much golf since :( Both courses have been in great shape everytime I've played them.

How about Fort Wayne? What coures would you recomend up there?

Brookwood is a very nice old course, Chestnut Hills is nice as is Autumn Ridge. If you want to go a little farther Cobblestone is a great course up by Kendallville. Just south of Ft Wayne is Grey Goose, which is pretty neat. Ft Wayne was ranked 23rd by Golf Digest, and I actually believe it is fairly deserving. I could keep naming good courses. I will definitely try to play Bear Slide this year, and if I can straighten out driver I might be brave enough to try Purgatory.
