It's cold, wet and windy here in Houston. Today the range was open but it was on the mats only. Recently the range installed some long strips of artificial turf to replace the mats. The new mat/turf is really soft.

The wind was blowing about 20mph into us. I figured I'd hit the wedges today just to get some swings in. Hitting the lob an gap I noticed my balls were backing up when they landed. Pretty cool because I am seldom ever to get a ball to do this let alone a range ball. Sometimes they'd bounce and spin back 5'. It wasn't because of the wind either you could see the ball dancing around.

My question: is this because the club was able to get down under and through the ball? I went over to the practice green and hit some balls off the regular ground. None were backing up but they were landing really soft. Is it in my best interest to stay away from these mats?
