Hmm..I'm not sure there are, not with the purses, seriousness of competition, swing gurus, psychologists, trainers etc... people are so serious now. There are some people that say whats on their mind and are a little quirky..Willie Mac, Geoff Ogilvy, Rocco.

Yeah, it seems like it was more of a GAME back then instead of a BUSINESS. At least it hasn't changed as much as other sports have.

I think that they're there, just not at the top of the rankings. Plus, in the 24 hour media cycle, hyper politically correct, I-need-a-PR-guy-to-take-a-dump society we live in, most guys may not care to be anything but under the radar. They don't want to be on the news for the next 3 weeks for some flip comment they made without thinking first.

They usually don't get a chance as they start the game at say 5 years old with their parents reading right out of the Earl Woods 'How to Teach Your Kid Golf' manual and watching them swing after swing regardless if it's in a tourney or on the range.

Then the only kids that get D-I golf scholarships for the most part have played a bunch of AJGA Tours which middle class kids usually cannot afford and those who do get a scholarship and are not from a rich family, usually are behind the 8-Ball as they have to spend their summers working while their teammates just practice and play golf every single day during the most crucial time for a golfer. Not to mention, they can afford the best teaching and latest and greatest equipment.

THEN, if you get a kid that defies those odds and gets out of college, he has less of a chance of making it on the PGA Tour because paying for Q-school and playing mini-tours won't is not affordable.

To me, it's really a question of getting more golfers involved in the game and more of a diverse group of golfers in the game. It's become more of a rich man's game again and has been that way probably for the past 15 years.

The great thing about this game is where you went to college has little impact on what you do on the big stage compared to sports like basketball and football, but the expenses of the game are doing their best to make things difficult for those who are not in the upper echelon financially.

If you had to go out and stand next to your competitor for possibly 5-6 hours (range and round) would you really want to act like a jerk. Can you imagine being paired with a McEnroe like character for two days? I think most of these guys know they need to concentrate on their golf make as few waves as possible and just blend in. Blame a lot of it on the fans. The fans drive the media who are always looking for the controversial story that sells copy. In the old days there was little media - golfers could be characters and one would never know if they offended anyone.
