Gone to the dogs

I have been playing golf, this time around, for about 12 years. Up to 3 years ago I was nicely on my way to single figures then in April 2000 I hit a big shank on a 200 yard par 3. Since that time, yes 3 years!, I have been plagued by shanks. mainly I hit them on par 3's but I can also find them anywhere on the course. If I don't hit more than 2 shanks in a round then I reckon I've done well. Despite having lessons, seems like 100's, I have not found a cure that works. Standing further away from the ball, closer to the ball, shorter backswing (seems to work best), posture changes....I've tried them all.
Par 3's when I don't hit a shank ball flight tends to be a pull (out-in?). I'm 49 years old and now have gone from 11 to 17 handicap in 3 years.

Ideas?

Thanks Ropehook. I had read them and very interesting they were. I was really hoping someone had a more 'condensed' explanation.
Pointed question: I do seem to play better (just) with a reduced backswing, but I lose a lot of distance. Could it be that with the reduced backswing I am getting the club back on plane and in-out, whereas with my normal backswing there is a tendency to 'hit from the top'.
I just do not know how or why this flaw should develop so suddenly and remain with me for so long

Pinman,
Hopefully brian or someone else can answer that question, i'm not
a teacher just a avid golfer. I do know that when this happens to
me it's a posture thing, another words all my weight either is
on my heels or toes. That would cause "throwing the club" offline.
I know what works for one person doesn't work for another.

Pinman: Make sure your aim has not left you into believing you are correct, make sure your not aiming right of your target, it is a black hole that you can fall into. It looks like your square to the target but your not. Have someone check this, just a thought.

One of the worst shanks come from an outside in swing, open face.

If your taking the club back with the upper lead arm it should keep you more inside and more on plane. Your diffiently off plane.

Hang in there, your confidence may be low, it will return better than ever.

I do stand a little closed sometimes, but how would that result in a shank? I could see that standing open would cause the club to go outside and result in it.

Always a positive though: I've learnt how to murder a 3 wood and my short game has improved 100 fold. Case of having to, just to stay competitive
