Gotta love the golf channel and their exaggeration of distances

So, you've got Brandel Cham-whatever blowing some smoke up you know who's butt because he flew a 3 wood over 1000foot high trees, faded it 100 yards and flew it to the hole 275 yards away.

Um let's see:

1) it was 275 yards to the hole
2) he landed it at the front left corner of the green that left him almost a 25 yard putt.
3) 275 - 25 = 250 yards

So let's see, he took his 3 wood that he can fly about 275-280 (before it rolls on those trampolines the tour calls fairways) and setup for basically a slice. With his swing speed it wasn't that difficult of a shot to get it somewhere around the green.

You give me any really good player who can swing a driver 115mph plus and i bet they could create a similar shot.

Also, don't kid yourself, Tiger got lucky with where he landed it. You put down 10 balls for el tigre' and i bet he doesn't put half of them on the green from that same spot. In reality he was playing to somewhere close to the green cuz he knew he could get up/down for birdie.

I also believe he hit 8 iron from 200 yards today too ;)

Totally disagree, Jim. I've never seen a TOUR player hit that kind of shot as consistently as Tiger does. But I agree that telecasters tend to over-hype the amazing, if that makes sense.

Jim, I thought the same thing. Also, I only heard yardage from the guy on the ground, which usually means he was using the yardage played with the dogleg - Tiger cut the dogleg and several yards off the shot. If they did use ShotLink to his ball, then I'm wrong, but if they didn't, that shot was quite a bit shorter than 275.

I paced off the yardage after the round,I got 371 yds. By the way I spoke to the superintendant and he said those trees are only 293 ft. high.

Most tour players won't ever do that type of shot in a tournament because most won't have the confidence to pull it off.

However any GOOD player (i'm talking a + handicap or mini tour and up) can do that type of shot. I mean i can do it but i can't hit it THAT FAR. My attempt would come up short, if i did that shot it would probably carry about 235. All he did was hit a giant high slice. Not that hard in reality.

Now, you want to talk about a HARD shot tiger has pulled off lately? His 5 wood out of the bunker at the Boston TPC last week. Now that was an extremely difficult shot. Out of a bunker, with basically a 50-60 yard slice to a small green with trouble EVERYWHERE. Awesome shot! much more impressive than this one lately.

But Tiger didn't need 10 balls, he did it once, under pressure, in competition.

You give me any really good player who can swing a driver 115mph plus and i bet they could create a similar shot.
Would they need 10 balls or 1? ;)

Would they need 10 balls or 1?

Of course it depends.

I can throw a haymaker and land it square on someone's chin if everything works out right.

A world-class boxer will do it more often.

It was a very good shot and requires a good amount of power to be able to pull off. In other words....bottom line it was a very good shot, by the best player in the world. It really isn't that surprising tho, and if it was said to be a 275 yard carry then I think that's suspect. Nothing else you can really say.

However, Tiger is for sure not the only person who can hit this shot. Not that it's been said directly. But seriously.

Can be hard to hit it high with a 3 wood off the deck. (esp. if it's a tight lie cause it's not a shot where you're really hitting down on it a lot) What does it take? An open clubface (prolly just at address), high swing speed, good contact. And of course a plane line left enough. Open your stance, open your clubface, hit it. (hopefully you're capable of moving the club fast enough and you hit it on the button)

...

Of course if there's anyone who you expect to pull it off it's Tiger. But then again (regarding the call), if it's an exaggeration it's an exaggeration. (and he's gonna attract them) Not like it's uncommon.

Tiger made the shot. First try. Not on the range, but in competition.

Kudos, Tiger.

*on a side note, the telecaster's yardages always seem a little suspect.

I can hit the high cut 3 wood all day long - just mine would end up 100 yds short in the trees. The bright side is I might find a couple of decent balls while I was searching for mine.

There's distance...and then there is DISTANCE.

I hit my new driver (Cleveland XL Tour 9.5) about 280 average. On Tour, I'd average a little less than 270, looking at who hits it that far. Maybe only 265.

David Toms averages 270 on Tour, and he is at least 10 yards longer than me, but not all the time.

Mike Finney has always been longer than DT, but at TPC of LA on Saturday morning, I sorta-kinda kept up with him.

See?

None of this makes any sense.

Here is how I see it so far.

Mike Finney hits it X, DT hits it X -5, and BManz hits it X -10.

But in my last 20 rounds, I average 280 on tee shots (using GPS carts, or yardage into greens, or range finders).

Yet, on Tour, where the runways...I mean fairways, are super fast, David hits it 270.

Maybe he hits lots of 3-wood on those holes?

Anyhoo, two weeks ago Tom Bartlett hit 3 less clubs into every green than me, and hit a driver or two 70—seven zero—past me.

How far does Tom hit it?

I'd say 300 average, but on Tour? Who knows?

I know this, Tiger hitting 3-wood 260+ way up in the air is NO PROBLEM.

Give me about a 5 MPH wind, and I'll fly a few on the green from 260.

My driver speed is only 109.
