"If you do a handful of things correctly--like take the club away without breaking your wrists and keep your head still throughout the swing--you can play pretty well without too much thought... With all the ways we have now of analyzing the swing, you can make the game very difficult--and not much fun." AP in Golf Digest, Try My Timeless Tips.

Amazing power and athleticism. Refreshing to hear his simple approach to the game too.

Arnold had a great swing. His whirly bird finish only made it look unorthodox.

The one thing that stands out is his athleticism. It's amazing how much his left knee and hips have already begun the downswing but the club and hands are still going back.Tremendous inertia being created. Not easy to do.No secret there folks...you can either do it or you can't.

Another thing is the overating of axis tilt.Arnold does not slide his hips much...he's a rotater. He has some axis tilt and that's enough...no need to go ballistic. As long as the head is kept back, axis tilt will be created regardless of hip slide.

Look at the size of his hands! Holy cow.

And note how hard he snaps his chain. Hips basically stop at impact and everything whips through. Power.

I love how everyone must talk about his swing like it is real unorthodox too. Like he only got by because he is athletic (which he is)...and as if they can't believe how good he is.

I have nothing about unorthodox swings if they work but...

Take away the fact that he rips at it, has a propeller finish, and does a few other quirky and jerky things pre/post-swing...

...and...

Looks dang good to me.

He does get STYLE points for the propeller though. :)

I cannot speak for others who talked about the athleticism but I was no implying he did not have a good swing. There is a lot of good stuff there to be sure. I guess my impression came from only getting to see his swing after he was like 70 years old. When I saw the video his athleticism was what struck me first. You can just see the sheer power. Also makes me wonder how far he would have hit it with today's equipment.

Yesyesyes I know what you meant man. I tried to word it so as to not direct my post at you but didn't do good enough.

You said nothing untrue...he was very physically capable and athletic looking.

I was just speaking generally.

He would hit it far today I'm sure...!

Don't have stats but I wouldn't be surprised if he could clock over 120 mph if he were in his prime today. That's just a guesstimate. No doubt though he busts 110.

Almost Forgot

Worth mentioning too (of course) that even as adimant as he is about a steay head, his head moves all over the place during his swing. (no big deal)

If I'm not mistaken, his grip and his effort to keep his head still seem to be the things he emphasizes most.

Was the whirly bird finish to prevent the hands from releasing. I'm guessing with the strong grip he had and as closed as he was at the top, if he rolled the hands it was fore left, so was he holding it off?

Not sure why he did the whirly bird finish...I have but cannot remember. You may be right though I am unsure.

I always thought his grip was weaker (thought it was neutral) than in that YouTube clip I posted. (the close up) I think that must've been fairly early on. I will have to poke around the net a bit sometime and find some pics.

Take this with a grain of salt because Ive never really studied Palmer's swing all that much. I dont think he had a ton of axis tilt, sorta came over it a bit and covered the ball with his upper body. His exit past the ball was rather low so at his speed the club really had nowhere else to go.
