so I read the grip article.. and it made me think:

what would john daly, fred couples, and paul azinger all have in common if they forced a 'standard neutral' grip as brian recommends and had a flat left wrist at the top of the backswing and at impact?

they'd all be 10 handicaps.

If you want to find the proper grip for YOU, take the address position without a club, let the lead arm hang naturally, and put the lead hand (left for right handed players) on the club AS IT HANGS.
Anything else, and you will be forcing your body to do something which does not come naturally to it, and your swing will break down under pressure.

discuss.

Any golf swing motion is forcing your body to do something it doesn't naturally do. Look at Hogan. He changed his grip in the middle of his career.

They would still be good. It would be bad to have a strong grip and a flat left wrist at the top and it would be bad to have a weak grip and a cupped left wrist. But, if they weakened their grip and changed their wrist action, the club would be square. No doubt that the change would (might?) take them awhile to get used to, but all you are doing is re-training your hands.

I agree with benhogan54, although years ago I would not have. But since I have had extensive theatre training I have learned that "what comes naturally to the body" is more often than not just a habit, however old the habit may be. It is possible to change lots of things: voice diction posture carriage deportment, whatever you want to call it. What "comes naturally" to the body is for the left wrist to break down-- how else explain so many poor golf shots?

erobbins and all you string grip advocates and (or) all you arm hangs a certain way so you grip it that way people!!!!!!!!!!!

ATTENTION!!!!

Cross handed is A way to do it. There is a guy the REVERSE hands it and can play. The golfers you mention all have strong grips, Oh, you left out Duval and Lietskie(sp)....

You can have that team and I'll take..

NELSON HOGAN SNEAD PALMER NICKLAUS PLAYER MILLER WEISKOFF FALDO WOODS TOMS....

A potential problem I see is that NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY, ALL[EVERY] one of the guys I mentioned, arms hang so-called neutral...no chance

Think about it!

Just do it right....of course unless you all ready make millions doing it another way!

I saw a swing sequence of the reverse grip guy - talk about some lag and angle.
He tried the Q school last year, not sure where he finished.

Brian,

2 of the highest profile players who changed their grips from strong to weak successfully were Hogan and Woods.. most weekend golfers will not have the level of success of these 2 greats. Why? Because Hogan and Woods have the time and focus necessary to hit the tens of thousands of balls needed to make that grip BECOME their natural grip. The average golfer has neither the time or patience and will just be frustrating themselves as they revert to instinct and start hitting rush limbaugh shots (way right) when they least expect it.

Correct doesn't always mean right. How many professional baseball pitchers pitch with an 'incorrect' submarine or sidearm motion.. should they change? Don't mess with what works! Fix the parts of the swing that are broken instead! Proper stance and alignment will help the average golfer with 90% of their problems.

Just my opinion of course :)

but would you recommend to these guys to change their grip, or stick with what works?
