Grip question

Over the last year or two, I've become aware of the last three fingers of my left hand grip loosening at the top of my backswing. As this happens the thumb of my hand which starts out as "short" extends into a long thumb by the time I reach the top and the club falls more into my palm. Consequently I wear out the area of the grip under my thumb as well as the thumb portion of my glove, very quickly. As you can also imagine, my swing has become much longer in appearance and I tend to lose shots off to the right even if well struck. Interestingly enough I also tend to do it even with my chips and pitches and shanking has now become an occasional problem in my short game. My questions are:

1) Is it simply a matter of consciously trying to maintain my grip pressure at the top or is it more likely that I have unknowing introduced some mechanical flaw or improper grip into my swing that causes me to loosen those last three fingers.

2) I have very small hands, cadet small glove, I typically place very thin grips on my clubs thinking that it would be easier to hold on to. My cousin, who also has very small hands has taken the complete opposite approach and uses oversized grips which he feels are easier to hold on to. Neither one of us have any arthritis issues with our hands. I'm curious as to everyones opinion on this.

Thanks in advance.

I used to do something like that.

You may be over-rotating the clubface open I think.

Can you take a nice sized divot like the pros? (they hit door mats sometimes when it's real wet out)

You might want to start out at gripping it with a slightly longer thumb if feeling the need to elongate it during the swing is causing this.

But, most people do what you are describing because they think it will give them more power. It won't. It might be as simple as making it really clear to yourself that being firmer with the last 3 fingers at the top and your club not dipping as far down at the top is a good idea.

I fight this too, with me sometimes its a matter of gripping the club too close to the top, make sure your entire heal pad is resting on the club and not hanging over the edge. Also tightening the last 3 fingers seems to help me, when I remember.
