Hands ahead early

This thought has gotten me much more lag and a more powerful strike.

"Get your hands in front of the clubhead as soon as possible in the downswing." I tend to get the "hands ahead" feel by halfway down.

I always tried to be hands ahead at impact, but trying to achieve this relationship earlier is really helping me.

Does this make any sense?

Yes. Here's another thought which might give you even more lag - from the top, get your left wrist past the ball before the clubhead moves backwards.

MizunoJoe:

Thanks for the validation.

Could you clarify what you mean by getting your left wrist in front of the ball before the clubhead moves backwards. It is the "backwards" part I am not understanding.

Does that mean wrist in front before the clubhead moves forward in the forward swing?

It means start your downswing (hands) before the clubhead comes to a stop in the backswing. Lag-O-Rama!

galanga,

When you get to the top and transcend to the DS, sooner or later(preferably later), the clubhead will travel backwards away from the target. The more you can minimize the amount it goes backwards, the closer the clubhead stays to your right shoulder, and the more lag you'll get.

efnef,

That's a different action than I do, but one which can give even more lag, if the transition is done correctly.

matt,

That's it! I almost pause at the top, and then try to get the handle past the ball with the clubhead staying exactly where it is at the top. Of course that's impossible, but that's the intention - try to do something which is impossible, in order to produce the desired reality.

It helps me on most shot to think of getting the v's of my hand to move from the right side of the shaft to the left side at impact. For me it forces a bent right wrist.
