Harmon and Daly

John Daly has asked Butch Harmon to take a look at his swing.

They will start working together in January.

Harmon wants to improve his spine angle at impact and his extension through the ball to counteract his tendency to hit a hook.

Butch also said he won't try to shorten his swing.

I know you are a big admirer of the Daly pivot.

What would you do if you were his coach?

John Daly.

I wish him well.

I think that his pivot, when he was younger, was as good as it was ever done.

Good luck, John.

Oh...you asked:

"What would I do if I were his coach?"

Now that I am getting smarter in my older age, I am not smartening any others on what I would do with current players, unless I just can't hold it back.

:D

maybe big John needs to lose some weight, take 30 off he just might start kicking some PGA Tour butt again.

I am afraid it will take a lot more than John losing 30lbs to become competitive again. It just looks like he has no desire to do the things he needs to do to be a serious player anymore. He has used up his gift of talent and all that's left is a shell of the player he used to be. It seems like he really doesn't care anymore.

My hope is that Harmon can do more than fix John's hook. I hope Harmon can give John a kick in the pants and challenge him to be a serious player again. My fear is that John is very close to becoming a memory on the PGA Tour.

Amen to that.

It's so sad to see someone with so much natural talent, not mention his fan-appeal/star-quality; make so many bad decisions and get so very screwed up.

I wish him well.

I worked at a resort where Daly spent alot of time due to a sponsorship with the owner. Very misunderstood person. I know some of what he's done has been self-inflicted. But what a nice guy, very generous. Alot of good he does gets unreported.I wish him the best as well.

John needs:

A physical trainer, Mental Health (cognitive) provider, sponsor*, a smart swing coach, and some time on the putting green.

He would be in contention every week.

That may be what JD needs... but who knows what he wants...

You can lead a horse to water....

I liked his autobiography...interesting stories!

I suppose he wants to continue to eat, drink and smoke himself to death?

The Golf Channel's newest show: The John Daly intervention.

We would follow him to AA, to the shrink, in the gym, lesson with Butch, and at home. His weight loss diary is a public blog on TGC.COM.

A year later he wins another major.

I can only wish...

Even his course management is pretty lacking I think.

His grip it and rip it stuff is fine for TV.....and works when he's on.........not always the best choice though....I think he gets pretty reckless sometimes.

Daly.......my favorite.

What amazes me is how many people worship this guy. I know he does some charitable stuff, but so do a lot of people.

I know I'll get flamed for the above (because of the unwritten golf forum rules exonerating John Daly from all personal responsibility and decent behaviour and those that question his deity, get absolutely smeared), but I believe he used to get by on talent and that is not the case anymore. He is actually going to have to work to remain relevant.....I just don't know if it is in him.

I think his stardom comes from being the antithesis of the rank and file PGA tour player. Golf is a rather humdrum game....

I think that he should throttle back and attempt to improve the only two stats that count in golf: G.I.R. and putting average.

I haven't really thought about it before but you may be right. (or at least- those 2 are probably the MOST important)

Compare those two stats with the top ten players on the OWGR, and you will come to the same conclusion.

That's all I'm working on this winter + scrambling.

It makes sense too when you think about it because it doesn't mean that you ignore driving...........it just means that you have to be able to hit the green on a par 4 in 2.

(i.e. your tee shot has to position you to be able to do this)

I read John's book. I came away feeling as if John has a bit of denial going on. Now, things may have changed since its publication, but I hardly doubt it.

His best friend is Jack (not the bear). He likes to play very expensive games. And he likes women, maybe too many.

Maybe his personal life needs to be retooled by another type of professional ...
