Head at address

Was at the range yesterday and tried turning my head to the right and looking at the ball with my left eye at setup.. Pretty much the same thing Jack used to do..
Anyways i started compressing my irons better than ever and even had a feeling of staying behind the ball ..

Anyone know how to make sense of this or have any idea why it works? I'm 5'8 145 pounds and my friends always say i have a huge head and that its to big for my body lol

Maybe this has something to do with it?

So tilt your head and look at the ball with your right eye. Pivot and notice the resistance as your lead shoulder tries to pass your chin.
Now do what you are doing. Rotating your head to the right. You can now move that lead shoulder a little farther around. I think the
right eye, head tilting to the right shoulder is called a hookers head or words to that effect.

Left eye dominant.

I'm pretty sure the range of motion in the average neck is 60-80 degrees either direction, so you've got 160 degrees of rotation to work with, yes? Swiveling your chin a bit frees you up so you can get your 90+ degree shoulder rotation, otherwise it's gonna be 80 degree turn all day if you're just staring the ball down.

LOL im almost positive my swing issues are due to my over sized head!! Brian have you ever encountered this with a student while giving a lesson???
just checked everything in a mirror and when i keep my head normal my shoulder turn is super flat.. If i turn my head to the right a little at address my shoulder turn is perfectly on plane lol

I am also interested in hearing more about this issue. I don't have the head issue, but I have really big shoulders and I have a hard time turning without raising up. I've noticed alot of the tour pros tilt their head as they swing back. Any of the instructors ever deal with this?

Left eye dominant.

That's a possibility but most likely not probable. Every time head position is brought up in golf forums, a discussion of eye dominance soon follows. I sit back and chuckle at peoples attempts to describe how the eyes work in relation to the golf swing. For the most part they are completely blowing smoke out of their bunghole. The worse description of head position/eyes was done by the white belt master during TGC Golf Academy live show. I'm paraphrasing, but he basically said, "The importance of keeping a "centered head" allows the eyes to remain focused on the ball, which saves the brain from making calculations/corrections if the head is to move off of the ball."

That could not be any further from the truth! That naive statement proves to me that the white belt master does not know how the eyes move and work from a neurobiological sense.

I'm a lefty and do the same thing with my right eye. Although, not too the extent that Jack did. Brian picked up on this last year and stated it was because I am right-eye dominant. He said it helps me stay on top of the sweet spot.

I found a similar situation in my own experience. It began with a slight tilt of the head so that my right ear was closer to my right shoulder at address (I swing right handed). This perceptual change resulted in getting my shoulders steeper on the downswing and getting more of a thrower's release on the follow through. I really don't know why though except balance or something. Brian describes it in NSA as positioning the head so that water can run out of your right ear (though he mentions it in context of the dowswing)

I eventually added more head rotation toward my rear foot in the backswing so that I get a consistently complete shoulder turn. I am left eye dominant and left handed but swing right handed. It all started when I observed the difference between my left handed baseball swing head tilt (left ear closer to left shoulder) and my golf swing head tilt where my head was mostly vertical with tilt of the left ear to the left shoulder at the top of the backswing. I would come over the top and hit lots of pull hooks until I changed my head tilt. I have other issues but that allowed me to hit the ball better than I ever have.

This has helped and hurt other people who try it.

"Left eye dominant":

That is the reason that Jack gave for his turned head.

I'm not doubting you, but do you have reference from a book, or interview? I'm only asking because if you google: "Jack Nicklaus eye dominance", you will get people on forums debating that he was left and right eye dominant. Granted, the left eye people are the majority, but there are still a bunch claiming he was right eye dominant.

Hogan is another golfer who the majority of people claim is left eye dominant. But, just like Nicklaus there is a small fraction who claim he's right eye dominant. IMOP, from "looking" at 5 Lessons, Hogan is right eye dominant.

I think i figured something out today at the range.. Turning my head to the right makes me feel like im behind the ball ..
Ive been playing 2 years and have always felt like i was kinda on top of the ball at address.

So i was messing around with ball position today and moved it about 2 inches further away from me and about 2 inches more forward in my stance,. Bingo!! No more head tilt needed and now i feel like im actually behind the ball at address..

I'll assume you are joking and the punchline is "...because I AM more behind the ball at address. (I moved it forward! Get it)"

Can't remember where I saw this from Jack BUT if he was right eye dominant and turned his head to the right he would not have his good eye on the ball.
