Help With Over-Swinging

First off I wanna say that I enjoy all of the great information on the site!!! I own both NSA and Flipper which are helping. I am noticing that I cannot seem to quit over-swinging (going past parallel). I take several practice swings that are fine and when I step up to the ball, I guess that I get into the "I gotta crush it" mindset. Any help is appreciated and keep up the great advice guys.

I had this problem too. What fixed it? Extensor action. So make sure your right arm is as straight as possible by pulling the left thumb with your right hand to keep the left arm straight. Make sure you're doing this at the top. This shortened my swing alot; now when I try to take a really long swing, it doesn't even go to parallel.

To stop overswinging you should try swinging shorter. I'm kidding. I like detonum's tip. Also, hit some balls on the range pausing for a ridiculous amount of time at the top. People who overswing can't clearly differentiate that backswing from the downswing. In an overswingers head the last part of the backswing is confusingly thought of as the first part of the downswing. So when you pause at the top it will teach you to only go forward from there, instead of an extra backswing move.

IMO I'd say it's not overswinging if you are not throwing it away....are balanced.........

And of course if you are hitting it SOLID. (sweetspot contact)

If you are doing all of the above and not hitting it straight as well...........I'm not sure overswinging is your problem.

Sound right???

...

But......if you are OK.......................just take it back shorter...........and/or.............learn to float load. It works for me anyway. Shorter swing..........more FATS.

(my thought on it is.............would you take it back as far as Daly or Mickelson if you were gonna do a "drop and pivot"??...............nah)

my thoughts

you are not overswinging if:

1. you keep a lean to the right
2. you do ont let go of the club
3. you left arm does not overly bend

if you are not doing these things, and you still go past parralel, then you are not overswinging

Much thanks

Thanks for the info guys. I think that part of the trouble is that my left wrist isn't flat and it bends and cocks causing the extra movement. My practice swings are good because I concentrate on it and do it right. Then I step over the ball and freeze thinking about the 20 different things I want to do in my swing. If I could just shut some of that thought process down, I'd be a little better off. I'll take a look at it today and let ya know what happens. :)

Ah yes....those are good too pecky. I assume those are all backswing correct?

two aspects to overswinging: "overcocking" which includes a lose grip, and "over arm swing". Make sure your arms stop within four frames when your left shoulder stops. Unless you're like MDF.

Never "wait" until you have finished your back swing before starting the down swing.

In other words, interrupt the back swing by starting down early. That way you will not only stop your over swinging but you will also get lag.

Getting Better...

Well guys, I gotta say thanks again. I had one of the best rounds of the year today. I felt much more solid and my irons were much more on line. I did suffer several blocks to the right with my driver though. Which is strange because I hit my 3 wood very well.

Thanks for that tip Burner. I really have to work on my move to the ball. I tend to get quick with my upper body and chunk it frequently. If you guys have any good drills for this I would appreciate it.

Thanks again guys and keep up the good advice. :D
