Hi All, I have a hard time getting my weight to the left side on the downswing. It feels like I have to literally throw my hips left but when I do it I hit it long, high, and straight. I practiced this on the range today and felt muscles in my hips I was not aware of before. My question, is this a normal feeling or is it a compensation for a poor backswing. Also, could it cause physical problems down the road and if not are there any exercises or drills anyone can recommend to loosen up my hips. Walt

My first guess would be that problems getting to your left leg on the downswing start from not getting to your right side in the backswing.

If you are a higher handicapper, that hip throw to the left on your downswing might be a band-aid that works for a while. But soon or later, when you get decent arm motion, the hip slide is going to cause major blocks and hooks.

Soft Draw is a start: get to your right leg and swing around it. Then get to your left leg and swing around it.

This is a starting point. I'm assuming you're more of a beginner. Your hips should move laterally and turn in the downswing, but it should feel more reactionary than as deliberate as you are probably feeling it.

I would suggest feeling your weight shift back and forth more in your FEET and let the hips be more responsive.

I am a 14 handicap which is not low but not really high. I have no problem getting the weight to my right foot although I often rollout or sway to the outside of my right foot. The probelm is getting the weight back to the left even with a good pivot. I have tried soft draw but I lose a club of distance at least. I was wondering if the aggressive move to the left is the same as the counterfall and if others on the board feel they make an aggressive move to the left on the downswing. Walt

"although I often rollout or sway to the outside of my right foot. The probelm is getting the weight back to the left even with a good pivot."

That first sentence probably is the cause. The second sentence is the symptom. So you need to work on the cause. Pretty much impossible to offer tips without seeing it. I suspect you misunderstand the magnitude of weight shift. It's not as big as you may think .
