I've posted this question on another subject line but possibly this is the correct discussion line.

I've read and reread Homer's book and used it to reference replies on this board and another similiar one. Still confusing.

Could you describe briefly in non-Homer language the basic motions for the swing and the basic motions for the hitting stroke?

Thanks in advance for any attempt.

Hitting: The clubface stay square feeling, the right arm and feet halt the shortish backswing, the feet and right arm and hips and right shoulder ALL start 'out to right field' (or straight at the ball from the top). Once the pivot gets the downstroke going, the right pushes the club through with no face rotation as it pushes against the right shoulder.

Swinging: The clubface and left hand open on the backswing and the right forefinger feels like it halts the full backswing. The left hand and arm being FLUNG by the unwinding pivot start toward the ball as if to karate chop the impact area STILL open. The sweetspot of the club automatically rolls the clubface back to square.

Thank you. Being a teacher myself, obviously not a golf teacher, I appreciate the brief but descriptive answer. Thanks again.

These are the replies that make SOOOO much sense. A few of the other TGM'ers, although very lucid and knowledgeable, just don't get to the point in descriptive enough language that us dummies can really sink our teeth into. Good for you!

I like it...technical, detailed descriptions have their place (if you are familliar with the terminology) but this is also very very helpful.

It gives you the gist so you can better understand the entire swing as a whole, not just seperate parts.

How does one decide which to learn (hit/ swing)?

Scientifically, it all depends on your body anatomy and your neurological make-up. If you intend to follow the teachings of Homer Kelley in TGM, you should seek the assistance of a qualifed TGM Authorized Instructor to help you determine your natural swing tendencies and capabilities. One should not attempt to decide on one's own because that is too subjective and inconclusive.

Taking a series of lessons with Brian Manzella - GSED, will avoid any errors and misunderstanding of TGM, as is evidenced on several forums when well meaning people try to create their homemade golfswing and pretend it is TGM. Bad, bad ..... and the confusion is monumental.

Self...

I suggest to learn both.

You will be either, much better at one period. Or much better on the course with one.

If you can do both equally well. Use 'em.

Horton.

In any motor skill, your ability to perform is physical and mental. However since there are no tests available to find out what pattern you might use best, the real world of competiion (even just with yourself) is the best proving ground.

And, In my opinion, someone could learn a sound golf swing (all sound 'swings' are in the book) without any lessons from anyone...including me. They do it all the time.

...but, if you need assistance, call 502.417.4653 ;)
