Hitting it Low...

I want some advice on hitting the ball low.

I am a natural non-flipper high ball hitter. I think I hit it high because I hit it pure-ish with a high-ish clubhead speed. Also my plane angle is steeper than normal, although my divots aren't massive.

When I try to hit the ball low, I place is back in my stance. However, this creates too much backspin and causes a low launch and ballooning apex which is the last thing you want going into the wind. I get similar results by keeping my ball position the same but putting my weight more forward.

Another technique I tried was inspired by Tiger: keeping the hands low at the finish. I did feel like I got a bit more compression by doing that, but the ball still went high.

Can anyone help me?

Hi Tongzilla - I am in a similar position myself (although i dare say i flip a bit!). I have done all you mention above with some success. However one other trick i try sometimes is to stand a little further from the ball and control a 3/4 swing with my shoulders. This gets me to swing a fair bit flatter than normal and come in to the ball on a shallower angle. I combine with ball in middle of stance. This can work quite well and the miss tends to be a thin for me which is no bad thing in the wind. Anyway something to maybe try on the range.

stand closer to it, move it fractionally back, and make a shorter, smoother, slower swing. this will lower the initial launch angle, but as your not swinging so fast, you wont put as much spin on it and it should stay lower

play the trusty club that stays low

an arched wrist into impact with roll feel (left palm up) or see what happens with the hold off feel

get the hands further ahead at impact

stand up straighter

less tilt

move more upper body into the shot

some of the stuff isn't quite textbook, but whatever it takes to get less loft, less backspin and be a smooth operator.

JN (legendary high ball) has a lesson on keeping it low in his Golf My Way video. Using a stronger club and gripping down the handle is involved. For the long club, change your equipment or mix on windy days.

Tong,

I have struggled with the same problem in the past.

The main thing with hitting a low shot other than the obvious of keeping your hands in front to deloft the club, is your attack angle.

I learned this trying to hit a low spinning wedge shot.

You have to swing less down on the ball and more through the ball with your hands if front.

Start by attacking the ball a lot more shallow almost thinning it and then keep adjusting it until you are making a good shallow divot while still compressing the ball which you will do if your hands are in front.

Hope it works out for you, keep practicing

I will try to shallow out. This could be hard because my angle of attack is naturally quite down/steep.

Old cliche, but...

Swing a little easier (shorter) with more club. You'll get a lower trajectory with less spin, which I assume is what you're looking for. Best wind lesson I ever had; I won one of our local Tour events within weeks of this lesson on a very windy day with this in mind.
