"Hitting" short irons and "Swinging" Long irons/woods ?

Does anyone here use a hitting motion for short shots (a la TGM) and swinging for everything else ? I have ping ponged between the 2 and find it hard to hit distance shots with right arm thrust without over accelerating, whilst finding I get flippy and lack distance control when I am using my pivot for short shots. I definately prefer the swinging motion overall, so is it worth persevering with this for all shots, or can mixing hitting and swinging work ?

For some, the two ( hit or swing) are the same but just a matter of altered feel...

For others, the two are seperate and distinct ways of applying force to the shaft....

I think that ,at least in short shots, they are seperate and distinct.

The "left hand only" ( swinging) chip has big pivot involvment relative to the lenght of shot

The "right hand only" ( hitting) chip has hardly any pivot...

Which of the two forms does your normal short game resemble?

The chip and pitch ( 30-50 yards rather than "pitch" as in right forearm parallel to ground) that i tinker with have different feel but also completely different pivot styles... therefore the differing feel that I experience is manifest in different mechanics. For me, that is enough to suggest they are idendifiably distinct entities.

I find that i can "hit" nice chips which tend to run nicely... but i prefer "swing" for anything that needs finesse, zip, ( as much as my short game can manage anyway!)

I think for "hitting" full shots, the motion of the pivot increases and makes it difficult to differentiate from swinging and ,although the feel may differ for the individual, the mechanics look indistinguishable for some.... maybe not such a distinct seperation....?

But if it works for you then why not... Dave Pelz teaches a distinct swing for the short game pitch - finesse swing ( more of a swinging style, circle delivery path, in TGM-ese) because he feels that the long game swing does not give sufficient finesse for distance control. So why not have hit and swing... but truly ask yourself is the "hit" a feel or does it truly involve different mechanics?

To me, if both the mechanics and the feel differ considerably then they can be perceived as seperate and distinct.

Just my 20,000 lira ( ie. value equivalent 2 cents...just looks like more money;) too long !!! sorry):)

Ya if I need a bit more of a "punchier" swing and contact (more forward lean....leading edge divot) and add a little "drop n pivot".........

...........which makes me add more right arm through the ball. ("hitting feel")

(and that's VS. a "pure pulling from the top" sensation BTW....i.e. "swinging feel")

Right now for pitching and my short clubs I've been using the stroke with more right arm through the ball but I can do either fairly well. The "hit" one I think tends towards lower....the "swing" one I think tends toward higher. (by way of more/less forward shaft lean of course)

Not really a rule though so long as you adjust your setup to how you want the trajectory....and you alter aiming point/axis tilt.
