Hitting with the short irons....

I keep reading that it is better to learn how to hit with the short irons, why is that? What advantage to it is there?

I don't know how to hit (i dont think), brian could tell you whether i'm a swinger or a hitter but i don't consciously use right arm thrust so i doubt it.

However i do use it with short game shots like pitches and chips. I even chipped in a few times the other day using a hitters motion. I would like to "try" this with a short iron but am not sure how.

One last thing is that somehow i managed to "hit" an 8 iron at the range. My hands were BARELY above waist high and i tried to drive my shoulder down and use the straightening of the right arm to compress the ball and magicly i did somehow. The ball "sizzled" very loud (much louder than any swing sizzle i get) and it flew i'd say almost as far as my "normal" swinging 8 iron. I managed to do it one more time and then no more.

I have ordered the book and plan to start the long learning process but any help until then? Thanks

Jim

I'm going to jump in here without, hopefully, totally threadjacking. I've read that according to TGM orthodoxy that one should either swing or hit, but don't do both. I am a swinger, but have been experimenting with hitting at the range lately, and I get great results with my short and medium irons. Not so great with long irons. I seem to be able to hit a nice slight fade with my driver as well (although not as much distance as with my swing motion, which tends to be straight to a slight draw).

I like the idea of hitting my short irons but swinging the rest of my clubs, but I'm concerned about mixing components and messing up my swing. Any comments?

efnef....you're pretty much asking what i am. I hear that it is easier to swing the driver and long/medium irons and hit the short irons.

I'm asking how to do it and why

A lot of tour players hit their short irons and swing their longer clubs.

The advice to not do both means to avoid combining them into the same procedure. It is acceptable (in fact, advisable) to learn both Hitting and Swinging.
