so I was at the driving range and couldn't hit a decent shot.. missing both ways, and just generally hitting it awful as I tend to do from time to time. so, says I to myself, maybe my problem is that my grip is too weak or strong and I'm having to use my hands to try and square up or hold off the face. I've never had much success with a neutral grip and I've always played best when it's stronger.. but can be prone to wild hooks and holdoff block slices.

well, I figured I would start at zero.. hogan neutral. left thumb almost straight down the shaft with the "v" pointing at my nose, and then strengthen it in little increments from there until I was hitting it straight.

I set up to the ball and swing, preparing to see a wild 60 yard slice as I hit the ball with a wide open face... and look up to see it soaring straight and high. I proceeded to spend the next hour hitting high straight shots, with the occasional fat or high right, from what I think was my brain thinking it had to get my right hand way too involved in an effort to square it up.

Why is that bizarre?

because if I go slightly stronger, I hit slices. if I go much stronger, I hit fades and hooks.

I did discover that if I went slightly stronger from hogan neutral and fully released, I could hit nice draws.

the bizarre part is that apparently I have been doing it WRONG the whole time.

I was referring to your comment about the discovery of slightly stronger grip and full release resulting in nice draws, a key part of Soft Draw. :)

well it's good to know I have "discovered" something that is apparently correct. I've experimented with a "neutral" grip before but never had much success.. I suspect I had not gone weak enough and was still too strong to fully release.

went to the range again tonight and repeased my previous success. I'm not a bad player, but quite inconsistent. I hope this is the key to reducing that inconsistency :)
