How important is the Golf Swing to playing good golf?

Very important. Not sure I can give you a hard figure on that.

I'm one of these guys who needs to have it right before I can play.....I'm not a "it's not how it's how many" kind of guy....well that mentality is important when it's really really time to play (to think of only WHATs and no HOWs).....but I'm not gonna neglect developing my swing and my game either.

So.....for me....I want to get it sorted out....get it right....THEN play, mostly.

Sometimes I have a hard time drawing the line between playing and practicing.....but I do want to get it right.

And I will.....then I'll kick some ass. Word!

Go birdie_man we're behind you!

I'd say about 50%. Good swing technique lends well to good short game technique I think. However, without practicing and learning how to use that technique, you can shoot 90.

The work is never done, whether your name is Jack, Tiger, Bobby, Ben, or Paul, but you are on your way, and that is what matters.

Well it ain't about the Swing!!!...This mess didn't make it on the big tour..only a minor leaguer Triple AAA, Double AA, and Single A....

Why?... Can you spell Putting? Chipping ? Pitching?

Sure ...I knew you could!!!

Hmmm....Forgot to improve those areas ...

Most importantly..I never learned to think I was better than I actually am.....

Very very important to get there!!!

I played 12 rounds last year as a +1.6

I've played 3 rounds this year as a 0...But at the very least... I "look like" I can play!!!!

Yeah...But..

Good Stable Job....

Yeah...especially now that I've got a putter that is Fit 2 Aim....

You guys ever heard of Dave Edel?...

He's the next Scotty..I promise you!!!

Back to the original question....I'm itchin!!!

OK original question....

...

Of course it's important....

And of course, everything else is important.

You need the whole package really no?

...

Here's another question...

How many guys playing at lower than THE Tour level are there who are better ballstrikers than guys on the PGA tour?

(I assume there's some)

What's holding them back?

The Swing is small part in playing good golf. There is so much more to the game. Putting, Chipping, Pitching, Preparation, Mental toughness, Desire, etc.

Look at the Tour and all the different types of swings. Every year there are several players who rank in the top ten in GIR who lose their Tour card.

Having said that, for the amateur the swing is important. Getting better with your golf movements will help you improve your game. If you are wild off the tee and can't hit greens, you need to swing the club better.

I told you what's holding them back....Putting, Chipping, Pitching...add to that the ability to recover from missed shots and opportunities...But the most important factor AT THAT Level is believing you're better than you actually are.....You've gotta have a "sack" and believe that you've got a really big one and walk around like you've got a really big one.....I know I teach and have taught guys at that level...I was standing on the tee at a Nationawide Tour event....and not one guy impressed me with their ball striking or motion...Of course....I personally have higher standards than most...

Oh BTW...did I forget you need a lotta $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to stay out there long enough .......

How important is the golf swing to play good golf?....You gotta have something ...but the ability to score...make a number...getter done is what it's all about....How low do you dare to go?

That is one very good looking swing. I can only dream of doing that. Mine looks more like slap-stick comedy, lol. If the short game is what's holding you back then at least you know where to focus so go and do it. BTW, what kind of clubhead speed do you generate with your driver? Has to be a lot.

You told me!!!!!??!?!? O-K!!!! Thanks for the help!!!! DOOD!!

;) ;)

Pretty obvious eh?.....chipping and putting.....(the answer to the universe).

Whilst a good swing is a joy to own and a pleasure for others to behold, the ball has no idea as to how the clubface came to collide with its A$$.

Many very effective players have given testimony to purety of impact, not how it happend, as being the real truth of golf.

sure it is...jones, hogan, nicklaus, tiger, and phil were/are all of the longer longer hitters of their days i believe...if/when they can keep the drives in spots that let them get the ball close to the hole by hitting higher lofted clubs, it's a huge advantage...BUT they still gotta putt the thing into the hole (didn't anybody else watch freddie and tiger mis-putt away any chance at the masters this year?)...sure you can scramble like seve, but it's usually easier not to and with the greens those guys play on you better be able to hit your chips/pitches to the right spot or the ball goes bye-bye (esp at the us open!)...and even for many of the rest of us it's a lot easier game in the short grass and at least around the green in reg vs. the deep woods and chipping for par/bogey...so, yeah it's an important/helpful thing, but not the ONLY thing...

Very good thread with some very thoughtful answers. Everyone knows it is the short game and confidence that lead to golfing nirvana.

This is exactly my problem of trying to become a scratch "playa" I spend hours practicing my full swing and "chip, pitch, punch, full" procedure. However most of the time is spent on punch and full. I have never disciplined myself to practice what is most important, so I try to hit perfect shots and make perfect swings all the time and what that adds up to is a lot of 81's.

When Michelson got his 59, he hit 5 FIR.

It ain't the swing: take Trevino, Rodriguez, Peete, the present gamut of senior tour players - take your pick.

It's perfect impact and the short game. Mental toughness, patience.

Woods' greatest asset is his mental toughness. Nicklaus had it; Weiskopf did not. HE had a better swing.

The golf swing is at the top of the list in importance. It doesn't matter what type of swing, just that it gets the job done. To be good, it must be consistent, otherwise it's not good. The better the swing the more consitent it is, which will result in better shots. The player with a good consistent swing will more often put his ball in the correct spots from which to score. From then on, it's up to the quality of his short game.

Good swing = good scorer?

I think that a good swing definately is the basis to good golf. Alltough there are guys playing succesfully in the main tour (ET), whose swings really aren't too orthodox, but sitll they are able to score sub-70 rounds regurlarly.
One example is a guy called Paul Broadhurst. Playing in the ET. A great scorer. His short game and especially his putting is what makes him so good.
