Is there a drill or exercise or something that can help me make better contact with the ball? I'm hitting the ground before I hit the ball. I'm not hitting far behind the ball but I'm definitely starting my divot at the front of the ball.

Today at the range I hit off the mat back to the green I was getting the ball to backup and/or stop instantly from about 40 yards. I tried it again from the grass and I was not getting the same results but I noticed grass on the clubface where contact with the ball was made. It seems grass is getting between the club and the ball. The balls were landing close to where I wanted them to land but they were not checking up like the mat hit balls did.

Is there something I can do to work on hitting the ball before the ground?

Hate to say it but the "mats" can make everybody think they are hitting pure shots and since it's pretty much a PERFECT lie all the time if the club hits behind the ball on the "mat" well it's still a good shot..........Sounds like hitting out of the rough on the grass range, but it's obvious the club is not catching the ball FIRST. Weight is possibly to much on the right side at impact and PROBABLY coming out of your posture.

But I'm sure you'll get a much better response from someone else, anyway ,good luck
