I am giving up on worrying about my swing...

I am now giving up on worrying about my swing. I can hit balls all day well on the range and same with the short game, but on the course it's crap. 86 the other day. I think I am just tired of wrapping all my time in getting better with my swing when it's obviously mental.

Don't give up.

I'll be in Orlando soon, and I have some time free on Monday and Tuesday before the show.

I'll give you a lesson and tape it and post it up right here.

Deal?

ok. I appreciate the offer Brian. I have analysis by paralysis and it really isn't making golf very fun. Let me know what day is best for you so I can take a half day off. I go to Germany till the 12th so maybe the time off from swinging will help clear my mind.

Ps. My short game is like a 5 yr olds right now. yips (no offense to 5 yr olds ment in this post.)

You need to find a pattern that works on the course not just the range.Play more rounds where you don't keep score and just work on your swing like at the range. You will find what works and what dosen't.

Almost everyone can hit well the range. There is no pressure and you can groove a good rhythm by hitting multiple balls in succession. The acid test of a good pattern is on the course where you only have one pass at the ball with different clubs 3 minutes apart on uneven lies under pressure.Needless to say,it's easier said than done.[:I]

I think it's a combination of things that compound during a round. All starts with the short game. I know I can't get up and down from anywhere so it puts the pressure on the rest of the game. To many swing thoughts too.

I've been toning it back to just what Brian told me with the knuckles dragging the ground and it works great with short irons, but the further down the bag the hooks get worse and worse. I can forget it with my woods off the ground.

One example..I played thursday and on the last hole there was a 10-15 mph wind in the face. All I worried about all day was that one swing thought. Well I was 180 out and hit a 3 iron and blasted it 45 degrees to the right in the water. I set another ball down and no kidding hit the next shot 1 foot from the hole. I know it's there at times, but when it counts or putting it together for a whole round it just isn't there. It all comes down to timing and that has always been my problem. Can't get through a round if the timinig isn't there.

If I had any kind of short game I would shoot in the 70's every time. My swing will cost me a couple OB's or water balls here and there, but more times than not I should be able to get up and down.

Wanole,

Golf is not a game of perfect.Even Hogan admitted he only hit 2 or 3 shots per round that worked as planned.Repeatibility is the name of the game, even if they are only 85% perfect. How good a player you are is not based on your best shots but your worst.

Throttling back is an option for more consistency, but most golfer's ego cannot accept the distance loss on their best shots.I am guilty of that as well.I swallowed my pride yesterday, however, when I was under pressure from my playing partner.Facing a 192 yard par3 I would have normally tried to nuke a 4 iron.I took a 5 wood instead, made an easy swing and 7 foot from the hole, even though it wasn't a perfect hit.

I'm in Brian. I just need to know the date and time, so I can ask off from work. Whatever works for you. Just let me know the time.

I have a suggestion. Between now and your trip to Germany, spend most of your practice time hitting shots of about 30 yards or so. I mean at least an hour or two at a time. Also include in each session the full range of chips, pitches, lobs, sand shots, but focus on the tricky partial wedge shots. Also, this may sound funny, but make sure that when you are playing, you are not over-tightening your core muscles during the swing; that will make you decelerate and hit it right. A good drill is to count OUT LOUD, in a constant, even tone, as you swing (also works when putting). If your diapraghm tightens too much during the swing, you'll be forced to change the tone or even stop counting; that's a sign of too much tension in the core. Working on these two things turned my game around last season after I'd spent a couple of frustrating months working on swing changes.

be grateful that you can shoot an 86. I would love to be able to break 90 (without 47 mulligans).

I think most of the "mental" part has to do with preshot preparation. I know I always want to step up and swing without going through a "routine". Its no accident that the "pro's" have a very distinct (sometimes unique) and repeatable preshot routine. When I take my time I usually play much better but I'm the "anxious" type and want to play quickly; step up to the ball and let it fly. I don't even like to "stretch" before I play - I just want to play..........I think I suffer from golfer's ADD :)

Erik..I've been playing for 25 yrs and was in the low single digits in college, so it's a bummer to me. I sometimes feel like Ian baker Finch. yikes.

Ageee rbaum. I like to play fast. I think another problem is I don't play with any GOOD players. back in college when you play with better players you tend to get better. Now I am by far the best player I play with except one guy, but we both have the same faults. No confidence and no short game. Plus he tend to be a Debbie Downer and brings me down so I tend not to play with him anymore.

Brian,

You probably already know this is at OCN the weekend before you are there, but it's pretty neat with all the equipment. Althought I am sure you have access to shows like this all the time.

Wanole,

Your still way ahead of me. I am in college now and can't break 100 very often! ;)

I know what you are saying though. It can be frustrating at times.
