I need help with longer irons

Why am I hitting smothered pulls that barely get off the ground with 4, 5, 6 and 7 irons? Driver, 3W and short irons are very straight and very crisp with good trajectory, I couldn’t be happier.

I thought that maybe I was getting in front of the ball with the longer irons trying to hit them harder, but even when I stay back, I still pull them or flare them out to the right feeling that I can’t get to the ball.

Is there another problem here? I am going out of my mind here.

There are a few reasons:

1) Your clubhead speed is too slow. This is unlikely as you have to be pretty disabled to not have enough speed for a 7 iron.

2) You're not hitting the sweetspot. This is possible, you need to check your ball marks.

3) Your angle of attack is not optimal. Probably coming in a bit too steep.

4) Your angle of approach is not optimal.

So...change your setup and grip and swing to sort the above out.

I'll leave to it others to give more practical advice ;)

Personally, I don't think you're getting steep on it or moving "ahead of it". If that were the case, you'd probably be having problems with the woods, which you're not. For these reasons, you're probably not below plane, either.

So right now, to me, Brian's suggestions are the best (surprise, surprise). What I wonder is, could you give a more complete description of the ball flight on your bad shots with the clubs of concern? Pulls would seem to rule out swinging too far right (maybe I'm wrong about that Brian?).

The bad shots are mainly pulls that do not get off the ground much and go 1 club short, with impact high on the face above the sweetspot. A small % of these are pull cuts. I have not hit a hook or really even a draw in months.
