I went to the LPGA event last week

mainly to check out Natalie Gulbis and I must say WOW.

Anyways, I was watching Paula Creamer on the driving range with her teacher and on her right bicep she had one of those inflatable chilren swim wings. She kept it on while she was swinging. Any ideas as to what she was trying to accomplish?

That is an aid to prevent overswing of the arms, by creating width with the right arm, also extensor action in an artificial sense.

No, the aid prevents your right arm from bending more than 90 degrees. Has nothing to do with how far your upper right arm is away from your chest. I use two similar aids in my teaching, The Right Angle and a plastic aid that sits on top of your right bicep and keeps the lower arm from moving past 90 degrees of bend, think its called "swing extender" and Gary Wiren sells them.

wanole,

Hey, I was there too. On average, I think the women have better swings than the men. I could watch Seon Hwa Lee hit balls all day. And it's unbelievable how far Lorena Ochoa hits it. She can't weight more than 100 pounds!

BTW, did you see Paula Creamer hitting her hot pink range balls?

I've always felt that the average player could learn alot more from watching the LPGA than the PGA. Distances are much closer to realistic, and so are the swings (if you're lucky) ;)

I disagree.
For the most part the swings I've studied of the LPGA tour players are far less sound than those of the men. They need a lot of help. Manzella get out there, you could really make an impact fast.

she was using regular range balls. you could sit in the grass like 10 feet from her hitting. She was hitting it well so I was surprised to see her scores high as they were. I followed her for a bit and she and all the other girls just could not putt those greens. I saw more 3 putts than I can count. I don't know if it was the speed or the grain, but they were looking rather perplexed when putting.

The only think I like about the women's swings is the tempo. Just like the men the tempo is just awesome to watch. As for their swings. Females seem to have a lot of excess movement in them possibly to try and generate power. Although the Asian women seem to swing more in balance. So does Ochoa.

It is pretty neat to see a little 5 foot girl that can't weigh 100 lbs hit it 250.

Brian, no offense, but I'd love to be able to "polish" it the way some of those girls do.

wanole.....Paula was hitting hot pink balls one day on the range. I watched her for 30 minutes or so. Ochoa's balance is fantastic. She's probably the #1 female on the planet right now. It's unbelievable how far she drives it with such a little body...

Hard to argue that there are many that could use some TGM.

Kerr comes to mind as an excellent example of someone who doesn't need much help however.

I liked how she warmed up by creating a 'divot line'. Starting with a club/umbrella along her line, she began at the front edge and created one long, straight, line of divots - very nice nearly square divots.

And McGann - wow, can she bend a shaft. Some serious power there. Creamer was the only other I saw this week who could do the same.

All in all, there are some much better motions among the younger players, but a ways to go for many of them. Very little 'sizzle' on the range.

If only the girls would put a poster of Mickey Wright's swing sequence up on their wall and worship it...
One of the best motions of all time, man or women...

A few years ago I thumbed through her book at the San Francisco library. I think it was titled "Golf - The Wright Way". The photos in the book don't do justice after you have seen video footage of her swing.
