I've been playing Cally Fusions (non-wide sole) with Rifle 5.5 TF shafts for about a year now. For a short time, I got hold of a set of MacGregor M565 with Rifle Lite TF 5.5 tf shafts.

I liked the forged feel of the Macs but...after putting the shafts on a frequency meter, they were stiffer than 5.5. So, I went back to my callys and I have moderate success.

Today, I was having a bad iron day and started using a friend's Mizuno Mx-23 with stiff graphite shaft. I did not hit a bad iron shot the remainder of the day. Everything I learned to do from Brian and this site in the las 4 months seemed to just crystalize.

I originally got fitted for the Callys about 2 months after I started playing golf where I swung at everything like I was trying hit it off the planet. I am thinking the shafs are too stiff and I am overswinging to get the ball flight where I need it to be.

Can the equipment really make that much difference? By the way I hit the Mizunos, I know my swing has much improved as of late more than I am seeing results.

You cannot buy your game. You cannot throw money at the instructor and expect to improve. Likewise with equipment.

Decision making is perhaps one of the most important functions in life and golf. Unfortunately, most people haven't got the foggiest on how the make a good decision.

Bill, just the fact that you are on this forum indicates that you know how to find good instruction.

For equipment I suggest tow paths that you should take. The first is with one of the world's best head, shaft designers, Tom Wishon. Don't take my word for it. Get one of his latest books, Search For The Perfect Golf Club and Search for the Perfect Friver. Don't be side tracked, read one or both of these books then make your own decision.

The second path is also important. That is, the source of your equipment. After reading Tom's books and armed with this information go to a good club maker. How do you find a good one? Get one who has taken the time to get his Professional Clubmaker Class A Certification. With that you know he has the education and demonstrated his ability.

Stay away from those big box stores and being fitted by a manufacturer's rep.

Armed with the instruction associated with this forum and with the imformation from Tom's books you game should do nothing but improve.

Thanks Putt but...

I am 100% confident this is not the source of my concerns. I watched the callys being built. The shafts were not SST pured but...each one was "pured" by first looking for a spine and then attaching a laser and looking for the ocilation pattern.

I had my R7TP driver SST pured. I connect better with the more recently purchased FT-3.

Since I am still considered a beginner, I think the puring process is going to be more important to a low-handicapper vs. me.

However, I really think my shafts could be holding me back by being too stiff, causing me to overswing...which is producing sometime brillant shots and equally inconsistent shots.
