Interesting Left Wrist Anatomy

hello again,

been playing around with my body parts today (that didnt come out sounding at all right did it ! )........

specifically...my left wrist..what it can..and cant do...try this yourselves...

hold your left forearm up...so its in front of you, parallel to the ground...and parallel to the "target line" ( ie fingers pointing directly to your right), and turn your forearm around its own axis so that the palm is facing directly towards you and of course the back of the hand is facing directly away from you.....fingers are horizontal but vertically stacked on top of each other, ie:- forefinger on top, second finger directly underneath and so on...little finger at the bottom....

now..... introduce a small amount of cupping into the back of the left wrist...

now place the tip of your right forefinger....on the first knuckle of your left-hand-index-finger (the one closest to your thumb).....and while keeping your left forearm horizontal to the ground press down with that right forefinger to essentially un-cock the left wrist...what happens????

if your like me, what happens is.......yes of course the left wrist un-cocks....but also notice that the cupping INCREASES !....now lets try it but with a bowed left wrist....

set up as before.....but introduce a small amount of "bow" into the left wrist....press down with the right forefinger and what happens?????

if youre like me....the left wrist un-cocks BUT....the BOW INCREASES if anything.

One last time....set up as before.......but this time....leave the left wrist in a "Flat" position...neither cupped nor bowed....

press down again with the right forefinger....and youll immediately be aware....of a sort of "knife-edge" effect....where what happened can go either way....you might slip to the "cupped" side...and the cupping will increase....or...you might be lucky and slip to the "BOWED" side...and the BOW will increase.

Q.E.D as far as i can see is....

as your coming down..into "delivery" position and about to un-cock the left wrist....... if that wrist is even SLIGHTLY cupped...then uncocking it will only make that cupping even worse ( AKA....a complete flip/ break-down/ flick).....if your coming down to "delivery" with a flat wrist....well....its 50-50 which way it will go...you might be lucky and 'slip' to the BOW side of the 'knife-edge'....or you might be unlucky and slip over to the CUPPED side.

if you come down into delivery with a slightly bowed wrist.....then when un-cocking occurs....it will at least maintain that bowed wrist...or perhaps even increase it slightly.

Wrist test

Mine does not increase the cup or the bow, during the test. There might be something interesting in this, however, with some thought and range testing. Keep posting!

Interesting, as i said.......perhaps i have "strange" wrists, but i DEFINITELY detected a tendence.....to go to one side..or the other while the un-cocking was happening.

one other small thing to add

with the left arm in a position half way between the delivery position....and impact....... ie.....roughly 45 degrees open to the target....

set the left wrist slightly cupped........then simply un-cock the left wrist.......what happens?........the left wrist uncocks....thats IT.......but

from the same position..... set the left wrist in a BOWED position........then....uncock the left wrist....what happens? ( at least with my wrist )........ the left wrist uncocks......AND.......the left forearm turns counter clockwise.

just "my" wrists?........or anybody else's ?

I'll sum it up for everyone:

The stronger your grip the less "flat" or "arched" you will be at impact (ideally, not trevino here) and the less you will swivel with a flat left wrist, it will be slightly bent.

The more weaker or neutral your grip the more you will be "flat" or "arched" you will be at impact and the more you will swivel with a flat left wrist

Yup. BUT, when this test is done - with the wrist bowed, there is a significantly less chance of the left wrist bending forward or flipping. Kind of like Brian's "twistaway" cure fro slicing and flipping!

Maybe Brian really does know what he is talking about!

I think so too wolf

Yes Wolfman, i think he does too.

My point was that ( at least in the case of my own wrists, but i think everyone elses too ) is that when "delivering" the club.... with the wrist bowed it is anatomically inclined to stay bowed..not just intentionally-inclined.

I was trying to get someone into this position today, but they werent "getting it"..so..after a little thought...i came up with a little incentive plan for him....

"imagine....that...on the next swing.....IF you can bow that wrist as much as possible...AND uncock it as much as possible while it STAYS bowed....imagine that your clubhead is going to smash into your ex girlfriends head!"

He kept it bowed...and uncocked it and mashed the ball, should have seen the look on his face after he'd hit the first proper golf shot of his entire life, priceless.

I also have a bizarreo wrist. The instructor I took my lesson from pointed out that I have a slight bump on my left wrist when flat, a condition he either said he had never seen or rarely saw. So my flat wrist is not technically flat.
