Irons and lie angles

Have some new irons coming in the mail. The guy said I needed them 2 degrees flatter. Based on MY understanding of lie angles and what my misses are I didn't feel confident with this but he said he was.

SO......let's pretend that he is correct. What problems would arise with my old irons?

I realized that different folks are going to have different specs... But those of you who have flatter then standard lies, what sort of progression do you have through the set? Same flatness all the way through, or long irons different then short irons?

I know I need my irons flattened, but I'm not sure how much yet. I'll probably have my local driving range bend them, and I can get on a lie board there, but I also don't entirely trust them to do fitting. I've been doing my own tests with drawing a line on the ball with a sharpie, but I've still got some more testing to do. I also can get plexiglass at my work so I was thinking about making my own lie board. I can get the range to adjust them and they'll always re-adjust if I'm not happy.

Johnny - I've pretty much dropped mine all the same amount from where they were (2 to 3 degrees each).

It's good if you have easy access to alterations. I usually tell guys to start with a couple of clubs (6 iron and 9-iron for example) and see how that works before committing the whole set.

Heel heavy pulls or pull-hooks (or compensations to prevent them).

Yeah I was thinking misses to the left as well. The only problem is I don't pull the ball much. Pull-hook it some but not much. Normally my misses are a straight push or a little curve added to the right. Just doesn't make sense, HOPE he is right.

What about divot or lack of? Would thin shots be more common?

Curtis - I think the sub-conscious takes over at some point. No scientific evidence but if it looks like you're about to have the heel dig in I bet you make a correction somewhere. Perhaps you lift up to correct and thus the lack of divot depth.

Sounds like you're making a decision from a distance so all bets are probably off. My impression is that most players go with clubs that are too upright so with that in mind you are probably on the right track. Again, I think the best approach is to flatten one or two clubs and see how they work.

Thanks for the info. He ordered the set directly from Mizuno so they are all coming flatter. He did mention he can always bend them back if needed as they have a machine.

Forgot to mention that I only took two swings with impact tape. Both times he told me to hit down more on the ball which I tried. So my impact results were probably a little different than my normal swing. IDK, this guy better be right.

Yep, no worries with Mizunos. Very easy to bend. So much so that you'll want them checked right out of the box (UPS and Fedex are great sources for bending irons), and fairly often (more if you hit off mats).

and don't forget the special grind they can provide :D

Progressively flatter as the clubs get longer. I have mizuno 57's and as each club gets half an inch longer the lie angle is a half a degree flatter. I had each iron bent one degree flatter but the progression throughout the set didn't change.
