Tough to beat those guys...pissing into the wind. They beat you and have a sense of accomplishment? It's like wrestling a 3-year old and getting pumped about pinning them. Don't understand sandbaggers. I've managed clubs for 16 years and still don't get it. There will never be a truly fair way to handicap golfers.
Handicaps as a concept is fine. The dilemma is that everyone's handicap is determined under different conditions. Two examples:
1. My home course, Quicksilver, in Pittsburgh has a habit of moving the White tees to the front of the tee box on weekends (speeds play, they say). I play from there. Go out on Monday and the tees are the back of every tee box.. sometimes 20-25yds difference.. yes, it *does* make a difference. So, is my HI really accurate? Who knows? The most interesting approach to something like this was Lodestone Golf Club in McHenry, MD (Deep Creek). If the tee markers were at the front of the tee box, the pins were back.. etc. That way, the course tended to play (close) to the stated length. I like that.
2. Same course (any course). Two different players with similar handicaps/games. One plays on a sunny dry afternoon and posts a decent score; the other player plays in less than ideal conditions (rain and wind, say) and posts his score. Then they play together another day.. same conditions for both. There will be a difference.
Then, let's not even think about those who don't properly ESC, those who don't post all scores (casual or tournament), those that post only tournament scores and not those casual rounds, those that go South for a week or two in February after not touching a club for 4 months and post scores in the 100's and come back as a 18 when they finished the season as a 12. Yes, I've seen and experienced all of the above. We're having a discussion right in our group about a guy who shot a gross 74 as a 16 (85% of his HI) earlier this year.. his HI was reduced to 12.5R (GHIN), but some don't think he should be made to play at that because it was a 'fluke'. He played at 12.5 at Myrtle Beach and recorded a mid-90 something and a 102.. don't tell me he didn't have scores greater than 7 on a few holes. Yet, he posted the mid-90 and the 102. Yes, he is one of the leading money winners. Go figure.
All that being said, you need to handicap some how, some way. We all can't be scratch golfers.. although we wish we were. I'll still try to compete. I did beat this guy at a tournament 2 weeks ago.. I finished 4th in my flight.. 1 stroke ahead and more $$.
