Hey everyone,
Still struggling with that hook. Too much in-out and underplane shallow. Taking divots with the driver is fun! ... yeah.. right.
Anyways, working at the range yesterday I was having a really hard time taking divots as usual (shallow approach will do that to ya). I suddenly remembered something Brian said in COFF about Ben Doyle forcing him to "bend over like a real golfer" to get rid of the flip reward.
Well, I figured maybe the reason I couldn't take a divot was because my overal posture was too far from the ground in the swing, only making the in-out swing path worse eventually causing a cast past the ball (I've watched my swing on video, and while I don't full roll swivel, I don't really flip either, I just come through so shallow that there is no chance of taking a divot since the low point is hardly in the ground).
Anyways, I decided to experiment and see what happended if I really took the "bend over like a real golfer" to an extreme. Not so much with the back, but with the knees. I bent my knees and sat into the golf swing way more than I ever had. I could feel immediately that if I didn't keep my hands ahead of the club all the way though, I'd never hit the ball. Felt very compressed, but figured what the heck, try it.
The results were very interesting. For one thing, I was taking great divots. Still a little too much out to the right (must swing more left!), but get this... I was hitting mostly either straight shots or FADES. Often too much fade for my taste, but that's a huge improvement. My contact was much better as well, the ball really mashing off the clubface. The shots also seemed much longer than normal.
I never thought my posture was that far off, but maybe for my build, the correct feel is one of really sitting down into the shot. And I mean really sitting down, like double the knee bend.
Did I mention it worked on my short game as well, very tight dispersion wedge shots... hmmm... onto something?
Oh and before you ask, yes, it did feel very much like I was loaded into the ground (very baseballish) and springing through impact (pull back, run up, jump).
After the holiday I'll try to get some video up.
At least the year ended with a good range session!
