Kuchar doing "The Tumble"?

See the video below. Yes, I know the camera angle isn't perfect but still.....is it just me or has Kuchar dramatically changed his takeaway and shaft angle at the top (less across the line) over the past couple years? Has Kuchar been reading "The Tumble" thread here?

Pretty sure Sergio and his Dad didn't get in a time machine when he was young, and read "tumble" threads here either.

Kuchar's swing is evolving though.

His club reaches a position at the top prepared for a pure tumble as much as anyone I've seen for sure

Kevin,

Interesting comment! I had always thought that more laid off = more "pure" tumble. So are you saying that there is such a thing as laid-off too much at the top? How does too much layoff result in less tumble purity? What bad things can happen during the downswing if you lay if off too much?

Define laid off too much. Where is it getting laid off? Late? That's no good for a lot of people. You can lay it off coming into impact, as well. If you use too much out hand path to lay it off or body tilt, neither are good.

Bad things are shanks, fats, wipes, drop kicks and sweeping hooks

It's an anti under, anti wipe, anti drag, anti slow, anti SLICE move.

In terms of whether he is making an extra effort to draw it, it is worth looking at the shape of the hole he is playing.

Hovering the clubhead, my guess is he is trying to speed it up a little. Again to get a draw.

I just thought this comment was interesting:

The thing that's interesting here is that Kuchar's shaft at the top is not laid off. It's actually pointing almost exactly parallel to the target line. I just think it would be interesting to learn why Kuchar is in a better position for "pure tumble" than someone who lays it off at the top like, say, Jerry Kelly.

Laid Off vs. Across The Line

Another question:

For low-handicap players, is it correct to generalize that laid-off at the top tends to promote fades while across-the-line at the top tends to promote draws?

Tiger's current swing seems like a decent example of this. Seems slightly laid-off to me, resulting in fades.

Just realized that we had a long thread on this subject a couple years ago (plus a Manzella video)! Here it is:

Laid off does at the top does not result in fades and across the line does not result in draws no matter hat Hank Haney says. There are waaaay to many other things to consider before you can make that statement.

Push slices, push hooks, pull hooks, pull slices, straight starters that hook late, straight starters that hook early. You can sort all that out by laying it of or crossing it, right? You must be joking Hankey.

It seems like the hands being so low at the top of his backswing and not really being laid off, there is little room for negative tumble to set up the tumble.
