"Lag pressure and tracing straight plan line"

Found this quote in the Croker/BM video from Brian about the key to playing well is just lag pressure and tracing straight plane line. The question for me has always been; HOW?.
I have my Club Championship this coming weekend and have not been able to play alot this year. I always blow up in this thing anyway as my swing just does not hold up. I know I play well when I have the thought of being aware of "my lines" (feet line and target/plane line) and not going OTT of plane line or swinging on a strange path/angle to this line. I assume this is my attempt at tracing a straight plane line.
So, I would like to come up with a simple swing thought for the CC this weekend and practice it this week. Plan on watching "Flipper" again, but would really like to hear more about how to just concentrate on lag and tracing and go play some golf. Any help appreciated.

I can't remember where it is in the Book, but HK wanted to uncock and roll on the plane line and it's certainly is an important concept. I am working on imagining a beam of light being attached to the butt of the club and for as long as possible try to shine that light at the ball-the inside aft quadrant.

Re-read Brian's articles on the forces and pivoting and lag. He likens this to pushing a shopping cart. In the store if you start out walking and then walk a little faster and faster (smooth acceleration) you are pushing with your legs but you feel it in your hands. That 'heavyness' is a desirable feeling. On the flip side, and here's what many golfers do instead, is that if they want to accelerate they do so with their arms and hands. For example, let's say I wanted to ram you, at close range, in the shopping mall. Most peole people would lunge with their arms and hands and they certainly would feel it early on but how much power would be there when I actually hit you?

Or, I can steadily accelerate keeping the cart close to my body. In this case, more power is available LATER. People tend to expend the stored energy too early and the result is little or no compression. Here the goal is bowl you over with my 'total pounds', not what I 'threw' at you with my puny arms and wrists.

Check out that website and see how the lasers work. That's how you trace a straight plane line. The key is to do with an on plane right shoulder though.

it should simplify things for you though, just feel like you use pp#3 to trace that straight line. You can practice with a flashlight at home.

For a swing to work in a week and help you not blow-up I would try hitting about 50 balls with a nice compact, smooth swing while maintenaing your spine angle. Lose 10 yards on every iron, heck 15 yards if it allows you to repeat consistently. By the way, what is your handicap? If you are a good enough player to not rush the transition when taking the hands about right shoulder height this should get you through the club championship quite well. It would be difficult without seeing your action for me to recommend much else. Just hit balls with this idea every day beforehand, even if it is only 30 balls to get this new way of swinging into your subconscious.

I am a 5, but have not played that much this summer so not really playing to it. 70% (at least) of my problem is mental. Have the "don'ts." Don't go right, Don't go long, etc. Need a quickie lobotomy! Just trying to figure out a way to get it around. Compact punches may be the trick.

Yes....starting with success (small swings, short shots, clean impact) and building ONLY REINFORCES GOOD POSITIVE IMAGERY and success. Not getting in over your head: I do believe you can restore good mechanics using this approach almost overnight. I see pros practice for hours with a wedge hitting 90 yards; then at the end of their session they play a few 7s, 5s, 3wds and finally they bomb their driver 300+ WITH THE SAME SWING. Miraculous: and it is the thinking, feeling, comfort, and ease of those SHORT swings that embed the DNA for the driver.

Want to learn how to drive? Practice your wedge. Want to learn how to hit wedges well? Practice your driver (meaning don't forget the other elements of pivot, exuberance, abandon...)
